And stop talking to the "Democratic Party". The easiest way to lose an argument is to automatically divide it between Democrats and Republicans.
Poverty is not a "Democratic" issue. It is an American issue. We should address it as such.
Unemployment is not just a problem for "Democrats". It is an American problem.
Inequality and the shrinking middle class does not affect Democrats only.
Murder on our streets by gun thugs is not just a problem for Democrats. Republicans get shot also.
Healthcare costs are not just difficult for Democrats. Everyone has a problem with how much it costs.
Going to war is not just a question for the Party that might be in power at the moment. It is a question for all of us.
It is time we stopped the Media and the Political Parties from dividing us by Party labels. It is time we talked to all America, not just Democrats or Republicans.
Otherwise, we will never fix these problems that are destroying our country.
This is not a call for "bi-partisanship". This is a call for America to wake up and stop being used by the powers that be.

(11,804 posts)But the truth is that our Conservatoid friends believe that they have solutions to all those problems - even if, these days, the solution is get rid of Obama and Democrats. But before that they had more concrete but equally foolish nostrums to fix them.
Take unemployment - we all agree that something should be done about it - that it's hurting a lot of people and needs to be addressed.
But then when you talk solution person 1 says "Lets impeach Obama and the democrats; as long as those socialists are around business is going to be afraid to invest."
person 2 says "If we get rid of the safety net, than people will be motivated to work hard and get jobs"
Person 3 says "Lets get rid of the minimum wage and safety regulations and health care mandates; right now it's too expensive for companies to employ people."
Person 4 says "We need a program of target tax cuts on businesses that employ people - use government help to make it profitable to hire more people."
Person 5 says "We should have a WPA - do some big infrastructure projects and put money into the economy which will lead to more jobs."
Person 6 says "We need to look beyond capitalism to find a solution; capitalism is built on exploiting workers, and thus always favors high unemployment so as to make it easier to abuse employees."
What then?

Those are all arguments that we hear.
Businesses are doing pretty good. Ninety-five percent of all the wealth created since 2009 has gone to the top 1%. Those are the facts. Those are not Democratic or Republican talking points. The middle class is shrinking and we have more people on foodstamps than any time in our history.
People, Democrats and Republicans, cannot get jobs if there are no jobs to get.
How many businesses are going under because of the minimum wage or safety regulations? The chasm between the "haves" and "have-nots" is becoming wider and wider.
Yes, some folks believe when working people spend more, it is good for the economy. In fact, it is better when working people spend than when wealthy people save or invest in the stock market.
We need to get beyond labels and do what is best for our people.
However, when we give our arguments, we should address them to the American people, not just the Democratic Party. That is my point.

(11,804 posts)I'd say it also will work a bit better if you start from a belief that the American people deserve good jobs and deserve to be helped - by focusing on what is positive about American culture and building on that.

We do not desert our democratic principles. We only present them to all of America.
