Gunman identified in D.C. Navy Yard shooting as 34-year-old Aaron Alexis of Fort Worth, Texas

At least twelve people are dead after a shooting in a heavily secured building at the D.C. Navy Yard, where as many as two potential gunmen may still be at large.

One gunman, 34-year-old Aaron Alexis of Fort Worth, Texas, is among the twelve dead. Officials said he recently began working as a civilian contractor.

The FBI, which is leading the investigation, believes the gunman used the identification of a man who used to work at Navy Yard, reported Pete Williams of NBC News. It was found next to his body in Building 197, where most of the victims were shot on the third and fourth floors.

People with proper badges are allowed to enter Navy Yard without having their bags checked, Williams reported.

He must have known he wouldn't be checked, and so he had free access...

And now at least 12 people are dead.

Horrible.

Aaron Alexis, a 34-year-old man from Fort Worth, Texas, was identified as the shooting suspect in the rampage that killed 12 people at the Washington Navy Yard on Monday.

Scott Gordon of NBC-5 in Dallas-Fort Worth reported that Alexis was arrested by Fort Worth Police Department in 2010.

He recently began working as a civilian contractor for the Navy.

Background checks must be getting sloppy.

Then he ambushed a responding DC officer and got that officers AR-15.

That is how he wound up with a shotgun, pistol, and AR-15.

While Alexis' motive is still not clear, officials said he is a former avionics electrician with the U.S. Navy. He had been arrested at least twice previously: once in Seattle for malicious mischief, and once in Fort Worth in 2010 for discharging a firearm in public. He has lived in New York City also.

Alexis was carrying an ID card belonging to Rollie Chance, who was placed on administrative leave last October. Chance told officials he does not know Alexis.
