A new report says the European Union is failing to fight social and institutionalized homophobia and transphobia in many of its member countries including Italy, Greece, and Croatia.
The report, published Wednesday by Amnesty International, shows where governments fail to specifically protect LGBT citizens with laws that prohibit discrimination or prosecute hate crimes on the basis of sexual orientation or gender expression. The report also cites a lack of effort in some countries to impede or prosecute antigay or antitrans violence. An estimated 80% of such crimes go unreported, and many of those surveyed say they are reluctant to notify police of such attacks because they fear being outed.

(53,956 posts)I know that several of the former Soviet bloc states are also having some real problems with homophobia (anti-Semitism, anti-Rom, and anti-immigrants). I am a little surprised by Italy, but given the recent banana attacks against black politicians, I guess I shouldn't be all that surprised.

(53,956 posts)Given that I speak both languages from those countries, I was taught about their culture and history. Spain is very anti-Semitic, more so than Italy, which is surprising. But Italy is more racist, it seems, than Spain in regards to color. It likely has to do with more of a Moorish influence in Spain. From what I hear though, the gay scene in both countries is pretty active and a blast.

But yes, parts of Europe are positively medieval on treatment of GLBT citizens.
