Video Games - is it the medium or the content?

Or to put it another way which of these two statements most closely reflects your position on Video/Computer games.

1 - Video / Computer games are dehumanizing and play to our basest instincts; they intrinsically cut us off from having real conversations with each other. The medium has little if any potential.

2 - Video / Computer games, as a medium, has a great potential. Some of them are very well done, but like most mediums, the bulk of games are pretty crummy and some are downright terrible. But the form itself has promise.
