(39,961 posts)the artificial "beef", melamine in milk and every other sordid practice ... shouldn't we be alarmed by this?
OhioChick
(23,218 posts)I know that I am.
Aerows
(39,961 posts)and there will be God only knows what in it. I don't think I'll be eating anymore chicken sandwiches for about ... ever.
OhioChick
(23,218 posts)Therein lies the problem, as it will eventually.
As you mentioned, kid's school lunches, Meals on Wheels, hospital/nursing home food, etc.
Aerows
(39,961 posts)And this will taint the food supply for a long time. It's disgusting.
Brickbat
(19,339 posts)Also:
None of the National Chicken Councils members have expressed an interest yet in processing their chicken in China because the logistics are complicated and the profits are limited, said Bill Roenigk, senior vice president and chief economist for the trade association.
There are ways, given the current laws, that the Chinese-processed chicken would lose its identity, Roenigk conceded. But were talking about a limited amount [of product].
Still, important to keep an eye on, of course.
Aerows
(39,961 posts)and taint it for decades. Institutions are going to be the hardest hit ... like school children, hospitals and elder care facilities.

(39,961 posts)I can't. I tried, but I am prone to anemia, so red meat is a necessity.

(36,926 posts)I'm not questioning you, but, for your sake as well as the animals', I hope, at least, you are eating organic free range meat.
Aerows
(39,961 posts)and yes, I do free-range if possible.

(3,539 posts)If it means 'nuggets', breded 'cutlets', or canned it won't be a problem. Don't touch the stuff.
If 'processed' means cut up, fresh or frozen, chicken will go the way of shrimp. Too risky to bother with.
Bad mental image....
Boat load of live chickens sent off from somewhere in Georgia, ferried through the Panama canal to be chopped up and frozen in China.
Aerows
(39,961 posts)but the definition of cooked is kind of fluid.

(2,354 posts)I also went to a neighbor who sells pork to a local grocer and bought a hog for my freezer. And we have raised our own beef for the last decade and i know exactly what they ate and how they were treated.
Until i find a similar source for chicken, no chicken. After my dogs were affected by the 2007 chinese melamine food issues, i have no problem changing course as needed. i can only manage risk not eliminate it, but i won't ever knowingly put any family member thru that again. Goes for veggies and well, everything else.

(3,133 posts)we moved to the country to raise our own meat and vegetables 2 years ago.

(2,208 posts)Too bad you turned out to be such a douche-nugget.
Hey... that's kind of like a chicken mcnugget!
A Chinese chicken mcnugget!!
But really, Free-Market Capitalism, people are really starting to turn their backs on you, when feasible.
You've become the ugly 800 pound gorilla in the room, and people are tired of the smell of shit that emanates from your every pore. You had a nice run, but your days are numbered...

(68,644 posts)Then I hope that domestic processors will vigorously promote their product.
Unfortunately, domestic and Chinese processing companies will be one in the same.
Aerows
(39,961 posts)because labeling will not be required. And as for going through, it's a done deal.
NYC_SKP
(68,644 posts)And restaurants that pledge to use domestic product.
While we can't make Chinese chicken be labled we CAN allow domestic chicken to advertise proudly!
Aerows
(39,961 posts)This is a bad thing because you know it will be foisted off on institutions where some of our most vulnerable are - children, the elderly, and those incarcerated.

(29,503 posts)Gentrification led to them moving elsewhere, but that's where I'd often go to get my chicken.

(39,961 posts)considering some of the stories coming out of China about their food supply. Once ours gets tainted, you really can't go back .

(29,503 posts)On the one hand, it would be nice to live in a world where you didn't need to be discerning as to food or restaurants, etc.
But on the other hand, the reality is that we do live in such a world. I always look at labels, I eschew fake chemical-ly ingredients, anything produced or processed in China (when discernable; if no indication is given, I just won't buy it, period), buy organic if possible.
It can be a time-consuming process, but there is no alternative. Kind of makes the traditional Italian passion for locally grown and handmade foodstuffs seem sensible.
Aerows
(39,961 posts)necessarily, it's for whatever the Chinese plants ship back to our most vulnerable citizens, including our elderly, our children and those that have no choice in what they eat.
I know I'm repeating myself, but it scares me that this will enter our food supply.

(27,247 posts)"...for starters, Chinese-processed chicken will be allowed to skip the Product of China label in several instances because the country of origin labeling law, or COOL, does not regulate cooked meat and at least for now, the U.S. does not import raw chicken raised and/or slaughtered in China."
And yet, whenever I visit the US from Japan, I'm not allowed to bring with me any Japanese meat product, including heat-and-serve curry that has just the tiniest bit of meat in it...
Aerows
(39,961 posts)You can't bring a handful of meat into the US, but China can now ship it back to us after it has been "processed".
sandandsea
(1 post)This whole thing was cooked up to open the Chinese market to U.S. chicken and beef imports. The Chinese want us to reciprocate and allow Chinese chickens into the US. Smithfield, largest US pork producer, was just bought by China. If you don't want this alarming trend to get exponentially worse write your Congressman. Some are already complaining but requiring annual inspections is MEANINGLESS.

(65,616 posts)I had NO IDEA until I saw your postings on this the other day! Simply amazing and really turning me off to chicken. I will be way more careful to make sure I know where the poultry is coming from!
You deserve a big thanks for bringing this to light, THIS is the kind of news we need to know!
