The Evangelical Orphan Boom

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/09/22/opinion/sunday/the-evangelical-orphan-boom.html?pagewanted=all

IF you attend an evangelical church these days, there’s a good chance you’ll hear about the “orphan crisis” affecting millions of children around the world.

These Christian advocates of transnational adoption will often say that some 150 million children need homes — though that figure, derived from a Unicef report, includes not only parentless children, but also those who have lost only one parent, and orphans who live with relatives.

From what I see, most of the kids are Asian. So, these parents/churches are basically starting with a blank slate.

My neighbors. They used to be. They moved when the Haitian Baby trouble came up.

They had a lot of kids. The kids didnt go to school. They were home-schooled, which I take to mean, they were driven around by their parents and made to go door to door , asking neighbors for donations to "Save a Haitian baby", meaning, give them money so they could "adopt" a poor Haitian orphan into their loving Christian home, (and I suspect, so they could add to their door-to door child salesteam)

The soliciting kids were cute and shy, and awkward,They were of different ages and sizes and races. I felt sorry for them, because they didnt seem to ever play, or act much like kids. I'm afraid I didnt donate for their parents to buy a Haitian baby.
These people had a couple of dogs too, who ran at large and chased cars and killed chickens. They needed to get a better handle on canine care before I pitch in to buy them any more kids.

Things went along , as they do, Then the Haitian Baby kidnapping scandal broke . It was in international news, but it was an Idaho story too.

Members of a church group had been arrested for kidnapping Haitian "orphans". They werent only kidnapping babies, but was selling them as well.
The group leader had taken a lot of money from church members with the promise of returning with pretty Haitian babies, for them to love and lead to Christ.

My neighbor was a member of this church group. They were going to make a fortune "rescuing orphans" for Jesus.

Didnt work out.
They got foreclosed and moved away, suddenly. I hope those kids are okay.

When they moved, they left their barking, chicken killing , car-chasing dogs. Just left em.

The new people who moved into that house have the dogs now. You would not recognize Indy and Bubs. With some leash-training and attention, they've become happy secure , rather chubby companions, and no longer seem to need to chase cars, or do bad-dog stuff.

Wish I knew if those children landed as well as those dogs.
