I can't imagine saying that too often, but in this case..... And of course, it wasn't just that he had a gun; he had courage and heart.
A steely former British Marine armed only with a handgun repeatedly risked his life to save about 100 people from the Kenya mall massacre, running in and out at least a dozen times to shepherd frightened civilians to safety, British reports say.
But his tale of heroism was revealed after he was photographed helping two women to safety with a handgun visibly bulging from his waistband in the aftermath of the siege Saturday, The Independent newspaper reported.
Sources said the ex-soldier was having coffee with friends at the Westgate Mall in Nairobi when as many as 13 Al Qaeda-linked gunmen stormed the complex carrying AK-47s and began slaughtering shoppers and lobbing explosives.
The brave Brit kept a cool head during the takeover by helping shoppers flee and then repeatedly returning to the complex to help.

(13,992 posts)The article doesn't state that he actually engaged the assailants, which means that he could have done what he did just as easily if he weren't armed at all.
I don't mean to diminish what he did -- it took courage and he deserves absolutely all the praise that comes his way.
But it didn't take a "good guy with a gun." It just took a good guy.

(785 posts)I mean what was wrong with him!? He could have fallen and the gun could have went off and shot someone while he was rescuing those people from the vicious gang of armed assailants! What a thoughtless bastard!
