I have been using Yahoo for 15 years now and all of a sudden they have a "sponsored" "mail" that cannot be deleted.
I think that I will quit them but will Gmail do the same? Are there other web-based email services?
It is one thing to have a display ad on the screen. But to have an email inserted is really disturbing.

(9,314 posts)I have it configured with Thunderbird. I just have to remember to go into the actual Gmail account every now and then to delete all of the old emails.

(86,872 posts)these guys it should be easy. Just find Yahoo on the page (alphabetical), click on that block and follow the instructions.

(31,464 posts)A bit of hyperbole to call it "unusable." Not my experience at all. For a free service I think it's pretty darned good. To each his own.

(3,069 posts)It was fine until a couple of months ago, and now I can barely stand it. I know it is free, but it has been free forever, and it didn't used to suck.

(31,464 posts)Like you, I don't know what the heck sponsored mail is. I've had a Yahoo Mail account for as long as I can remember and see no problem. Sure, they change their design and interface every know and then, but otherwise they're the "old reliable."
I have my own domain name with its own e-mail which I use for business and personal friends, but because it's not a widely recognized domain it is more likely to be flagged as spam. So Yahoo is good, and back before the iPhone it was a reliable way to get my mail while traveling. Now I use it just to respond to offers and such to help keep the junk mail out of my primary mailbox.

(47,551 posts)I first noticed it yesterday, but I saw others complaining for the past few weeks in the Yahoo Community.
You open your email and on top there is something that looks like spam - from American Express, to improve your joints, to protect your bank account, etc. But instead of a box to its left where you can check to delete or to identify as spam, it has a little light bulb image with a dollar sign inside. On the right instead of time of the email it says sponsored.
As I said, I don't mind display ads that I can ignore, but putting it into my inbox with me helpless to do anything about it is.. yes, an invasion of privacy.
When I first noticed it at first, it was on Firefox but not on Safari, then it crawled there, too.
I hope you won't get it but be warned..

(31,464 posts)I noticed that the splash screen is a big ad. So what? It could be a splash screen of puppies and kittens, I'll still ignore it. There is a very obvious log-in box. So just log in...Yahoo is not forcing you to get an Amex card, they're just paying the bills, just as we all have to.
