Hobby Lobby's homophobia is well-known, and second only perhaps to that of Chick-fil-A. But Jews? Srsly?
http://marlboro-coltsneck.patch.com/groups/opinion/p/hobby-lobby-doesnt-cater-to-our-people
Understandably irate, she called the home office, and was told, indifferently, that hobby lobby doesn't have Chanukah on its list of holidays.
Having heard this, and always wanting to be certain of what I write about, I just called the Marlboro hobby lobby and asked whether it would be stocking any Chanukah merchandise. I was told it would not. When I asked why, the answer - verbatim - was:
"Because Mr. Green is the owner of the company, he's a Christian, and those are his values"

There's some Christian values for you. I'm sure it has nothing to do with the fact that Halloween is the 2nd biggest money making holiday after Christmas. It's because Christians LOVE Halloween! Unlike those horrible gays and jews...

(3,514 posts)I only ask because I went into a hobby lobby once expecting it to carry rc stuff - but it was all arts and crafts type hobbies.
But I know I had been in another hobby lobby (different town) and all it had was rc stuff.
So - I wasn't sure if they were the same or not. Won't be planning on going back there anyway - but still curious.

My comment about having bought an RC plane at HobbyLobby might be erroneous. There is very similar hobby shop in the same area with a similar name that I might have bought the plane.
If so, my appoligies to HobbyLobby.

Marlboro, NJ has a non-trivial Jewish population. They (Hobby Lobby) clearly didn't research the demographics of the area. They might find a "free market" solution is right around the corner...

(1,937 posts)Hobby Lobby stores are closed on Sunday. The owner mandates this, but it is also mandatory that their warehouse and loading workers MUST work on Sunday. This is done to insure that their merchandise (junk) is delivered to their stores on Monday.

Refusing to serve a customer based on their religion, ethnicity, or race would be, but declining to sell specific religious, ethinic, or racial specialty items would not.

(63,210 posts)And if you're looking for hankies, you need only search for "Hannukah." Very useful!
Hey, I'm not defending this creepy, cultish establishment. I haven't shopped there since I learned of their whole corporate Christianist pandering years ago. However, I'm reluctant to give this particular story fully credit until it's corroborated by something more solid than three separate retellings, all alleging to be first-hand accounts.

(3,724 posts)But at Joanne and Michael's, I found tons of Hanukkah stuff. Nothing at Hobby Lobby. Read into that what you will, but whether the sales clerk actually said those words or not, it seems pretty clear where Mr. H. Lobby stands on the subject.

(2,135 posts)GandGModelshop.com? Yeah, their markup is a bit high, but they're a long-running hobby shop in the Houston area. I went there when I was in the area on vacation and absolutely fell in love with it.
Sadly, they don't sell paints or glues through their online store, for obvious reasons. Damn it, I needed some plastic cement, too, after I spilled my first bottle.

(57,936 posts)They played fundamentalist music the whole time I was in there. That's the music from my childhood. Nothing against it. (32,083 posts)I was in there years ago, and I heard this familiar song over the store audio system. I couldn't place it at the time, but when I got home, it dawned on me that it was a song that I heard regularly at Catholic Mass. It creeped the hell out of me, for the very reason you stated. Ick. That, on top of the fact that most of the stuff they sell is pure JUNK, and a huge waste of our natural resources. I can't believe there are that many people who want that kind of shit in their homes.

(4,876 posts)After internet backlash from a local blogger about its Marlboro Township store, Hobby Lobby is evaluating its merchandise.
Over the weekend, Marlboro residents began to discover and circulate a blog post detailing Hobby Lobby's lack of Jewish holiday decorations.
The post, written by Ken Berwitz, author of the political book Hopelessly Partisan, recounts a conversation Bewitz said he had with the craft and home store's corporate office in which the office allegedly answered, "Because Mr. [David] Green is the owner of the company, he's a Christian, and those are his values."
In a brief email to Patch, Hobby Lobby representative Vincent Parker said, "We currently do not carry any Hanukah items in our store. Our customers have brought this to our attention and we are currently evaluating our Holiday items and what we will carry in the future."
Wouldn't shop there anyway...

(2,682 posts)I can go to any number of other places -- Jo-Ann's, Michel's, even a bit of hobby junk can be found at Fred Meyer. And then there's all the on-line stores. When I wanted to start crocheting a baby blanket for a friend, I was dismayed to find that the lovely yarn store in the next town over has disappeared. I couldn't find another so I wound up buying yarn from Michel's -- it was ok but I would have been happier with a better quality. I've since found an on-line yarn store that seems to have quality merchandise. Next time I want to crochet a blanket, I'll check with them first. But Hobby Lobby -- not even on my horizon.
