Carbonite To Drop Ads From Limbaugh's Show Despite "Apology "

Carbonite To Drop Ads From Limbaugh's Show Despite Apology

Rush Limbaugh's public apology to Sandra Fluke may not be enough to keeps some sponsors from bailing on his show. On its Facebook page, online backup company Carbonite said Saturday the apology was not enough to keep it from dropping its advertising on Limbaugh's highly-rated radio show.

From Carbonite CEO David Friend:

“No one with daughters the age of Sandra Fluke, and I have two, could possibly abide the insult and abuse heaped upon this courageous and well-intentioned young lady. Mr. Limbaugh, with his highly personal attacks on Miss Fluke, overstepped any reasonable bounds of decency. Even though Mr. Limbaugh has now issued an apology, we have nonetheless decided to withdraw our advertising from his show. We hope that our action, along with the other advertisers who have already withdrawn their ads, will ultimately contribute to a more civilized public discourse.”

I am always glad whenever a company I use does something this important that I agree with.

It's validating.

brings it home for a lot of people...makes it feel more personal.

Ms. Fluke will always be remembered for the horrible names he tagged onto her and her reputation. Absolutely shameful. She should be given financial consideration.

I reject his apology. It was worse than nothing.

Sixth Advertiser — Carbonite — Drops Limbaugh Despite His ‘Apology’ Because He’s Beyond The ‘Bounds Of Decency’

By Faiz Shakir

Moments ago, Carbonite – a company providing backup software for computers – announced that it will no longer advertise on Rush Limbaugh’s show. CEO David Friend made clear in a Facebook statement that, despite Limbaugh’s “apology” issued tonight, the company was still pulling its ads because it wants to “contribute to a more civilized public discourse”:

<...>

Indeed, evidencing the point made by Friend, Limbaugh’s “apology” is riddled with offensive statements, comparing contraception to “sneakers” and implying that birth control is only a subsidy for personal sexual activity.

According to a ThinkProgress count, Carbonite is the sixth company to drop Limbaugh in the last couple of days. We will continue to keep an updated count HERE.

UPDATE The Huffington Post notes that AOL — the parent company of HuffPost — has not yet dropped Limbaugh.

Good links there.

This was more than just a business decision.

Rush made a teeny-tiny miscalculation this time. He forgot EVERYONE has a mother, a sister, a close female relative or friend.

He pissed off a lot of people.

26. Rush's Show is not "highly rated"

I worked in the radio ratings business for more than 10 years. Rush certainly has a large national audience namely because he is on 600+ radio stations, he's on during prime time listening hours, and he is carried in all major cities. In addition, he's many times on the largest AM radio station regarding signal strength.

OK, with that said let's cut to the chase. A very large majority of advertisers look for the coveted Adults 25-54 year olds to target. Half of that demo is women 25-54 year olds. Rush virtually has a small cume audience overall of female listeners. Second, his demos skew much older (natural for talk radio.) His audience is not a huge draw for most traditional adevrtisers. In addition, his highly political and polarizing rhetoric makes an ad buy on his show more toxic. There are not hundreds of advertisers blowing down his door to get on his show nationally. Premiere Radio (his syndicator) sells tons of programs all over the network and probably most of Rush's national advertisers are also buying lots of other shows (like Randi Rhodes.)

It is still very good however, that many of these folks are telling Premiere Radio to pull their spots from Rush.
