(34,136 posts)He's not going off the air any time soon unless Clear Channel buys him out. And Rush is wealthy enough to turn down any offer:
Thats right folks, controversy pays. After stints in Pittsburgh (where he went by the name Jeff Christie), Kansas City and Sacramento, the big man went national in 1988. Today he is a majority owner of his radio show, which receives over 14 million listeners per week. Thats down a tad from the peak of 20 million listeners in 2003, but it was enough to get Limbaugh a $400 million 8-year contract with Clear Channel that began in 2008.

(4,742 posts)1. Clear Channel (Premiere Radio Network) syndicates and sells the Rush Limbaugh show. If they start heavily feeling like he is a loss leader on salary versus income they will certainly start thinking about a removal. However, they would still have to settle. And that number could be a huge sum.
2. Frankly sponsors pulling doesn't really hurt Rush...but it does hurt his employer significantly. Say Premiere Radio (Clear Channel) has to pay Rush $40 mill per year and they start bringing in $30 mill year revenue...that is costing them huge to continue to carry Rush.
3. I think a better way to go than getting the national sponsors off is to go after the local affiliates. When they start losing money it hurts even more and they are more likely to make a chaneg to their programming. If Rush loses some affiliates it will cerate less ratings AND the national advertisers will be able to negotiate lower prices for their ads. Lower prices mean less revenue for Premiere Radio (Clear Channel.)

(75,480 posts)Many of the advertisers did remove their advertising, temporarily, due to that campaign. I don't know if this is the way to go. Maybe the occupy movement should occupy Clear Channel and demand he be removed from the air. I don't know if that will help either because they are sure to move another obnoxious asshole in his place. I'm afraid we are stuck with him until people stop listening to him and anyone like him.

(11,994 posts)fact that new sponsors will think twice before signing up, and if they sign up, they will want deep discounting.
I once asked a sponsor of RW radio why he signed with RW advertising and not LW. He told me that there was no downside to signing to RW, but if he sponsored LW, he was in for a world of hurt. He said this because he really did not care where his advertising appeared, but he looked for effectiveness.
The worm has turned. Today, if you sign up for RW, you alienate the LW, and vice-versa. There is no upside to partisan advertising.
Will advertisers return to Rush? Maybe some to appease the RW, but new sign ups will be thinking twice. Why automatically alienate a large portion of the target audience when you can use your dollars elsewhere.
My advice is to monitor new advertisers.
