Hope I'm not duplicating anyone else's OP accidentally, but I saw this and didn't want DUers to miss it. I was stranded in AZ for almost 8 years before I could afford to get out, and from what I saw and heard, these people are not exactly unusual there. In fact, Kingman is a well known white supremacist enclave. Anyway, here's the link to the article. Enjoy.

I was so charmed by the people and the wild burros, I wanted to come back...The people struck
me more as old hippie types, was I wrong?

(6,151 posts)But as I'm sure you know, things are not always what they seem on the surface. At first look we might be projecting our own preconceptions on the matter. And then things can change faster than we expect too. Kingman used to be a comparatively nice place, until the white supremacists decided to congregate there. They don't generally run around in costume, but they're still a dangerous bunch.
What kept me so long in AZ was the need to find a good cash buyer for the ranch I'd bought out in the middle of nowhere. After my fiance died, it took everything I had to hang on long enough not to be financially destroyed. The usual drought had worsened, although my 500' deep artesian well lost an average of less than 1' a year. But it was also 10 miles from the nearest fire station and banks wouldn't loan to buyers because of that. The last 5 miles of that road were dirt, so naturally neighbors were few and far between. I was lucky that they were fairly nice people and never bothered me too much, except for one. He left me alone after his first try.

(20,760 posts)The strange world these oscos live in, where there are "Aryans" and the Bilderburg whatsis is aligned with a secret UN plot to do... something awful, and the moon landing was fakery passed off by a liberal media under the control of the Whatchamacallit Grove secret cabal, and the President was REALLY born in Kenya...
And, worst of all, where the six people who agree with them are actually only the tip of an enormous iceberg of fellow-travelers who share their weird delusions and are just waiting for the Right Moment to bring about some stunning coup de main that will... I dunno what, restore something that never was? Make the "bad people" go away and or pay for their heinous crimes against the delusional Good People?
And because their delusions make them Useful Idiots for Our Beloved Oligarchs, nothing is done about the toxic effects of their bullshit on the body politic, and the well-being of all of us who need to care about each other and build tolerance, diversity, and supportive communities to deal with a rapidly evolving world.
Just.... tired of it.
