A monstrous once-in-a-decade typhoon loomed over Japan on Tuesday, snarling travel and shipping operations and prompting officials at the decimated Fukushima nuclear power plant to take emergency precautions.
Typhoon Wipha was barreling across the Pacific directly towards the capital of Tokyo, where it is expected to make landfall amid the Wednesday morning rush hour, hammering the metropolitan area with hurricane-force winds.
The center of the storm was 535 miles southwest of Tokyo at 3 a.m. (ET) Wednesday, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency, heading north-northeast at 22 mph.

And while the force of the storm had waned as it traveled north over the sea, it was still packing winds of roughly 75 mph with gusts churning as high as 120 mph, according to The Weather Channel, which cited the agency.
