Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler Calls On GOP Colleagues To End Shutdown: It's Time To 'Face Reality'

Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler Calls On GOP Colleagues To End Shutdown: It's Time To 'Face Reality'

WASHINGTON -- Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler (R-Wash.) broke ranks from many fellow Republicans Tuesday evening, calling on her party to give up hope of blocking Obamacare in the budget fight.

"Nothing positive will be achieved by prolonging this shutdown any longer, or crossing the debt limit threshold," Herrera Beutler said in a statement. "It’s time for my colleagues to face reality."

Until Tuesday, Herrera Beutler, known as a moderate, had not been among the Republicans calling for a clean continuing resolution to reopen the federal government. She said she stayed silent because she wanted to "give House Republican leaders leeway to craft the best deal they could."

"But it’s time to reopen the government and ensure we don’t default on our debt," she said in her statement. "I will not vote for poison pills that have no chance of passing the Senate or being signed into law."

It's a shame that the republicans did not realize that the time 'to face reality' was the day that they were sworn into office.

Personal life

In August 2008, Herrera Beutler married her husband, Daniel Beutler, who works for SeaPort Airlines.[2] The couple lives in Camas, Washington.[8] In May 2013, Herrera Beutler announced they were expecting their first child. In June 2013, Herrera Beutler announced her unborn child had been diagnosed with Potter's Syndrome, abnormally low amniotic fluid caused by impaired kidney function which inhibits normal lung development and is often fatal. She is only the ninth woman in history to give birth while serving in the United States Congress.[40][41] On July 29, 2013, it was announced that the baby had been born two weeks earlier, at 28 weeks' gestation. The girl was born without kidneys, becoming the first child in recorded medical history to breathe on her own without both kidneys. In a Facebook post, Herrera Beutler said, "She is every bit a miracle." They have named the child Abigail.[42][43] On July 24, 2013, Herrera Beutler was absent for a roll call vote concerning the NSA, where she cited health reasons. When she revealed the birth of her daughter, it was realized that the birth was her reason for missing what was considered an important vote.

In a September press release, Herrera Beutler announced that Abigail was getting healthier. "I'm pleased to report that her doctors are happy with her progress and optimistic about her future," Herrera Beutler said in a press release. "Dan and I continue learning how to manage her day-to-day care while she gets healthier and overcomes her health challenges." [30] She added that she would have to spend a lot of personal time taking care of her daughter, who is expected to be the first person in medical history to survive Potter's syndrome, but is hoping to return to the House Floor for key votes.[28][29] The birth has caused some controversy over the large medical costs for Abigail's medical treatment. Most the of the costs are covered by Herrera Beutler's Congressional health coverage.[45]

I am so glad I'm not a Republican or a member of the Tea Party... it would be so embarrassing, but especially in this circumstance. Needless to say I wish only the best for her innocent child. And for all innocent children.

13. "Large medical costs" doesn't begin to describe it. No kidneys? abnormal lungs?

Low amniotic fluid can also cause other birth defects as well, due to the inability of the fetus to move freely. Poor little mite.

I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy -- all we can do is pray that this woman has had her eyes opened to what can sometimes happen to people while they are planning other things to do with their lives.

I would only add this: It's not "a miracle" that she's alive. It's Science and Technology and Medicine, all in vast quantities.

edited to add: I just looked it up. There is nothing "healthy" about that child, and likely never will be. How sad. http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/001268.htm

...that might change a person's political perspective more than having a child with such a handicap. That the child is still alive is nothing if not a miracle.
