Its very, very serious, warned Senator John McCain, Republican of Arizona. Republicans have to understand we have lost this battle, as I predicted weeks ago, that we would not be able to win because we were demanding something that was not achievable.

(29,414 posts)is that they are so ingrained in the idea that they can't lose, or that they cannot ever admit to losing, that they will call even a failure a win!

(53,661 posts)...Democrats latched on to a provision in the House proposals that would have forbidden the Treasury to juggle government accounts so-called extraordinary measures to meet obligations beyond a debt-ceiling deadline...
The news came as the Treasury Department said it had only about $35 billion in cash on hand. It expects to run out of extraordinary measures to keep on paying all of the governments bills on Thursday, at which point outgoing payments might exceed that cash, plus any revenues, on any day going forward.
As the United States nears default, investors have demanded more compensation for lending to the government, with yields on short-term debt spiking to their highest levels in years.
Fitch warned that Congress has not raised the federal debt ceiling in a timely manner. It said that it continues to believe that the debt ceiling will be raised soon, but that political brinkmanship and reduced financing flexibility could increase the risk of a U.S. default.

The problem is that enough republicans in Congress believe they can do it - and win against the president and the Senate.. They believe that if they can default the US, they can in fact win this battle against the horrible ACA, and many of the other issues they might have - even if it means the US are going off the cliff...
And many of them do also believe in "the end of times" so if the world was going down the tube - economical speaking - then so much better... Then they can with their buddies "doomsday preppers" can survive in the aftermath of a horrible economical collapse in the US...

(280 posts)is McCain talking about? The deadlines for congressional actions came due and the despotic Republicans rebelled at doing their job. What battle is McCain talking about? The time for battle came when you took the job senator and the time came when you had to do the work involved. Any rebellion should have been NOT to spend the money in the first place.

(1,306 posts)specifically the grandiose St. Teddy Cruz (the pied piper) and the 50 or so Tea Heads (rats)
in the House, achieved all but two of their intended goals:
1) To look and sound like real tough guys, and to feed that empty self-delusion.
2) To compete for the title of "Best Obama Hater".
3) To give their supporters what they want: an outlet for venting their pseudo-lynch-mob venom.
4) To self-promote through pure demagoguery; to agitate and provoke the masses of morons for personal gain.
5) To prevent being "primaried" by another Tea Head.
6) To create an illusion that they are the true champion of the little guys.
7) To use this contrived stalemate to foment chaos and ill will, to point the fingers of blame at Obama,
and to pile on more of their personal, racist bullshit (e.g. "drop the Quran"
8) To be a permanent stumbling block to the President and his party.
The goals they failed to achieve was 1) to saddle Obama with the blame for creating this unnecessary mess,
and 2) to exact a ransom (long list of demands) by taking our democratic process hostage. These failures are
what will matter most in the end. They could not pull off their cheap, political trick. We (who are honest) know
which party was behaving like assholes and causing trouble for everyone. Blowhards, Posers and Traitors.
