McCain: 'Republicans Have To Understand We Have Lost This Battle'
With the government shutdown in its third week and the United States dangerously close to the debt limit, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) urged members of his party on Tuesday to stop digging.
Its very, very serious, McCain said, as quoted by the New York Times. Republicans have to understand we have lost this battle, as I predicted weeks ago, that we would not be able to win because we were demanding something that was not achievable.
Efforts to raise the debt ceiling and reopen the shuttered government unraveled on Tuesday, with House Speake John Boehner's (R-OH) proposals shot down by his conservative caucus.
The budget and debt crises were brought about by a conservative campaign to gut the Affordable Care Act, a movement that McCain and other veteran Republicans decried as quixotic.

GOP Senator Wants Cruz To Stand Down, Allow A Vote (VIDEO)
Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) said Wednesday that it's time for Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) to shelve his intransigence and allow a vote on a plan to reopen the government and raise the debt limit.
Ayotte echoed Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) in urging Republicans to recognize that the effort to defund or delay the Affordable Care Act was a nonstarter from the beginning.
"I never signed on to this defunding strategy even though I'm an opponent of Obamacare because I didn't think it was a winning strategy," Ayotte said during an appearance on CNN's "New Day."
With the United States set to reach the debt limit on Thursday, Ayotte said she hopes Cruz won't make an effort to block the pending compromise in the Senate.

I'm an old poop too (not quite as old as McCain) but I saw the truth of this when it was just a glimmer in their eyes.
