Help me out here... How did there end up being negotiations?

I've been away for a week dealing with the passing of my mother. Before I left, both side were refusing to negotiate. Now it looks to me like there are negotiations.

Could someone please bring me up to speed about what has happened and what we're giving up in these negotiations?

Thank you.

1. The negotiation was between right wing republicans and extreme right wing nutjobs

The nutjobs agreed to let the extreme right wing save them from themselves by allowing them to vote with the Democrats to open up the government and raise the debt ceiling.

The Democrats agreed not to laugh in their faces.

He will get a chance to sign the bill into law. Remember his choices are:
- do nothing (I forget how long it takes for the bill to become law this way)
- sign the bill (if he likes it)
- veto the bill (if he doesn't)

Let's see what the bill says and then decide.

And parameters for ensuring this does not happen again in 6 weeks or however long the CR and debt increase extend. No one wants this again, except for the Tea Party. It has been the Tea Party vs, Everyone else. Now the GOP is shutting up the Tea Party as part of the surrender. No ObamaCare talks.

...that is a negotiating tactic. When someone of either party or branch reports that negotiations have broken down, that is also a negotiating tactic. The two chambers of Congress, at least, have been negotiating constantly.

Default is a hot potato, though, and I am surprised the GOP has held it this long.

I'm not surprised the situation has dragged on as long as it has, the Republicans really
had to go until the last moment to have any real leverage.
