Officer Adopts Kitten Rescued From Storm Drain by Firefighter

A kitten left a South Los Angeles storm drain to find its "fur-ever" home Tuesday morning when Los Angeles firefighters rescued the cat and unknowingly united it with its new adoptive parent.

Firefighters arrived to Avalon Boulevard and 83rd Street in South LA about 1:15 a.m. after receiving a call from police about a cat that needed rescuing, said Sgt. Lizarraga with the Los Angeles Police Department’s 77th Division Station.

A hamburger was the method of choice to coax the kitten out of its dark hiding spot and into the open space where firefighters pulled it to safety, he said. The kitten nearly wiggled away before the firefighter grabbed hold by the scruff of its neck and placed it in the back of an officer's patrol car.

The cat was stuck inside of the trash-littered drain for about two days, Lizarraga said.

One officer took quite a liking to the fortunate feline. Officer Mannoury decided to adopt the cat, which appeared to be in good health after the rescue, Lizarraga said.

Looks exactly like our cat, but since he's only 2 colors, I'm guessing male.

I needed this today!

The guy who gave her to us had named her "Bernie" because she was the colors of the Philadelphia Flyers (red, black and white) and she was so hardy and tough.

The vet's receptionist greeted her the first time with "what a pretty girl you have there". She recognized that a 3-color cat is usually female, even if she had some tabby characteristics.
