Ecuador threatened Friday to sue Britain in international venues over the status of Julian Assange if it rejects a proposal to submit the matter to a bilateral commission.
The WikiLeaks founder took refuge in Ecuadors London embassy in August 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden for questioning in two sexual assault cases.
Assange fears Sweden will hand him over to American authorities for prosecution for publishing a massive trove of classified US documents. But Britain has refused him safe passage to Ecuador.
In hopes of breaking the deadlock, Ecuador has proposed creating a bilateral commission to resolve the issue.
We are hoping for a response, including one in writing, from (the British) and if they do not do so in a few days we will have to prepare an international suit so that the United Kingdom respects international law, Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino said in an interview with Ecuadoran public radio.

UK is perfectly content to let Ecuador be his jailer.
Assange is not just wanted in Europe, he's a bail jumper in UK.

I suspect Britain will give Ecuador's proposal all the attention it deserves.
Assange can rot.

(21,786 posts)They're under no obligation to recognise Ecuador's grant of asylum to Assange as extending beyond the territorial limits of the Ecuadorean embassy. Assange is a wanted fugitive sought on charges of sexual assault. The recognition of a right to diplomatic asylum under treaties entered into by some Latin American countries, and the agreement by those countries to grant safe passage to persons claiming extraterritorial diplomatic asylum, is not a part of broader international law, and doesn't apply to countries which are not party to those treaties (which the UK is not; nor is Sweden). They can sue, they'll probably be laughed out of court.

It's not about Britain, it's about facing the music in Sweden.
