(5,763 posts)I swear, that one was some Monty Python bit that should have been made, the minister being interviewed while fowl are slaughtered in the background. Somehow, it's the perfect metaphor for our government now.
I remember the RWers trying to spin that one, too. Like, "What? Nothing wrong with that scene. Slaughtering turkey's isn't wrong. Interviews aren't wrong. So what's wrong?"

(3,220 posts)Her image is corporate bull crap designed to appeal to the American people, but they even failed at that.
No real hunter would make a mistake like that. That's not her gun, and this is such an obvious canned photo-op.
It's time to stop pretending that she's anything other than an entitled tool that knows as much about nature as I know about building a spaceship.

Palin is an idiot. the picture is repulsive. The gun is not pointed at her head.

(3,249 posts)Let the folks enjoy their rants.
I also notice the scope covers are back on the scope. This photo was probably some time after the "shoot" and the rifle is unloaded and safe.

(20,805 posts)...and what this vacuous moron is doing is incredibly stupid...even for her...
cali
(114,904 posts)I adore bashing her, but how do you know that the rifle is loaded? someone downthread noted the scope cover is on. It's possible that the gun is also unloaded.
bullwinkle428
(20,645 posts)and literally the very first thing that the instructor taught us was to ASSUME EVERY GUN IS LOADED when it came to handling them - anywhere, anytime.
truebrit71
(20,805 posts)Even when scope covers are on. You never EVER point it at someone, always have it facing down range, that way, loaded or not, there is no chance of an accident.

This was literally 30 years ago when I took this class, and those words remain with me to this day.

(9,681 posts)the gun is NEVER safe to point at (or even in the vicinity of)something you don't want to shoot!

(114,904 posts)photographs can really screw perspective.
Jenoch
(7,720 posts)Her right elbow is above the trajectory of any bullet fired from that rifle in that position. That being said, if she had to pose for that photo, having the rifle more clearly pointed in a safe direction would have been better.
I wonder if she really shot the bear or not.

Logical
(22,457 posts)I guess you think she is frozen in time and not moving?
DefenseLawyer
(11,101 posts)That's pretty basic gun safety. In fact, that's probably Rule 1 of gun safety. She's in a staged photo with her gun pointed back in her direction. I haven't held a gun in 20 years, but I think anyone who has held a gun knows that you just don't do that.

(13,334 posts)Palin is breathtakingly stupid. That photo shows her making a statistically significant effort to win a Darwin Award. And yes, it does show rank cluelessness about gun safety.
Dash87
(3,220 posts)I suspect it was just throw there for the photo shoot by someone who has no clue about gun safety. It's people like this that cause accidents.
A gun, loaded or unloaded, should never be remotely close to pointed at something that you don't want to destroy.

(208 posts)she obviously knows even less about gun safety than I do
just like on her "reality" show where someone had to stand a moose up for her to shoot, load and hand her the rifle and even then she can't figure out how it works--- from a woman who claims to have done this many times
she should go hunting with Dick Cheney

Rex
(65,616 posts)A 270 at close range would mean she would be missing a limb and possibly the right side of her face. Goes to show what a total fake she is, just like the GOP pretends to be a political organization.
trumad
(41,692 posts)but anyone with gun safety knowledge knows that this is a big no no. The minute she stands up she's in line of sight for the rifle.
Rex
(65,616 posts)in a accidental discharge. I would think a 270 (or whatever similar caliber it is) at close range would do some huge damage, her face included. Just looks like the barrel is pointing straight at her elbow, which like you said even a rookie hunter would know never to point your weapon at somebody. Nor lay it down to where it can accidentally kill/maim you.
She was just so proud of her camera man for shooting the bear, that as she clamored to get the picture for herself the rifle became background - like the bear.
berni_mccoy
(23,018 posts)Rex
(65,616 posts)It is just so mindnumbingly stupid to have the barrel pointing in a human's direction, that I have to remember Sarah Palin is a GOP created persona. A D class actor at best.
I agree with some of the other posters, I bet someone else shot it.
Mr.Bill
(24,903 posts)but photo ops. I wish Rachel Maddow would challenge her to a shooting competition. Most people don't know it, but Rachel is an NRA member, gun enthusiast and competitive shooter. What better person to expose Palin for the phony she is.

(7,517 posts)The chances of that gun going off in that situation are basically zero. Yes, when one is handling a firearm, proper muzzle discipline is a must. When it is sitting by it's lonesome there is no danger.
Name an incident where a gun just actually "went off" on it's own? The only time I have ever seen it happen is in the military when a machine gun had fired hundreds of rounds quickly and "cooked" a chambered round off due to heat.
riqster
(13,986 posts)Boy Scouts and Army. We were taught to never point a muzzle at anyone we might not wish to get shot. And not to leave a weapon lying about, pointing at people or property.
When people get relaxed, and say things like "basically no danger", that is when accidents happen.
madville
(7,517 posts)There are hundreds/thousands of firearms in display cases, hanging on walls and on tables pointing at people in every direction at any given moment. No one gives it a second thought because there is no danger if it is not being handled.
A hunting rifle is in a case laying flat in the trunk of someone's car. The muzzle is going to point at a bunch of people during this car ride. Would that be unsafe? I don't consider it to be because it can't be fired.
riqster
(13,986 posts)Those weapons are (mostly) stock for sale, in a controlled environment that does not involve live fire. This situation with Palin is quite different.
The situation I would use as a comparison would be a rifle range. Weapons are pointed in a specific direction when not being fired...because, yep, they have recently been fired.
People with casual attitudes about gun safety get people killed.
