I swear, that one was some Monty Python bit that should have been made, the minister being interviewed while fowl are slaughtered in the background. Somehow, it's the perfect metaphor for our government now.

I remember the RWers trying to spin that one, too. Like, "What? Nothing wrong with that scene. Slaughtering turkey's isn't wrong. Interviews aren't wrong. So what's wrong?"

in a accidental discharge. I would think a 270 (or whatever similar caliber it is) at close range would do some huge damage, her face included. Just looks like the barrel is pointing straight at her elbow, which like you said even a rookie hunter would know never to point your weapon at somebody. Nor lay it down to where it can accidentally kill/maim you.

She was just so proud of her camera man for shooting the bear, that as she clamored to get the picture for herself the rifle became background - like the bear.

The chances of that gun going off in that situation are basically zero. Yes, when one is handling a firearm, proper muzzle discipline is a must. When it is sitting by it's lonesome there is no danger.

Name an incident where a gun just actually "went off" on it's own? The only time I have ever seen it happen is in the military when a machine gun had fired hundreds of rounds quickly and "cooked" a chambered round off due to heat.

Boy Scouts and Army. We were taught to never point a muzzle at anyone we might not wish to get shot. And not to leave a weapon lying about, pointing at people or property.

When people get relaxed, and say things like "basically no danger", that is when accidents happen.

There are hundreds/thousands of firearms in display cases, hanging on walls and on tables pointing at people in every direction at any given moment. No one gives it a second thought because there is no danger if it is not being handled.

A hunting rifle is in a case laying flat in the trunk of someone's car. The muzzle is going to point at a bunch of people during this car ride. Would that be unsafe? I don't consider it to be because it can't be fired.

Those weapons are (mostly) stock for sale, in a controlled environment that does not involve live fire. This situation with Palin is quite different.

The situation I would use as a comparison would be a rifle range. Weapons are pointed in a specific direction when not being fired...because, yep, they have recently been fired.

People with casual attitudes about gun safety get people killed.
