The more I read about this guy the more I see a severely unstable guy who was looking .....
Normally, during low-light training, we are on the firing line with several co-workers. Every one turns on their lights, illuminating a two dimensional target at the same distance. This turns your low-light shoot into darn near daylight. Then they shoot.
.... Just like you dont always see the whole animal when hunting, you may not always see the whole weapon or even a lot of it in low light. Look for the parts.
So let me get this straight - he can see weapons with X-ray Vision Clarity at Night but he can't tell a TOY in Broad Daylight
Ya - right
Notice the "Perp Mannequin" with the "Hoodie" on

(17,644 posts)and of course since his hand was on the "Stock" and not the pistol grip he wasn't in a firing position .... Duh!
But I'm sure an "Expert" would know that

(11,064 posts)at the driver while threatening to shoot him, I wonder what weapon he thought that the driver might have had?
http://www.sfgate.com/crime/article/Driver-says-Sonoma-deputy-pulled-gun-on-him-4944495.php
"There wasn't much room on the side of the highway, Westbrook said, so he rolled down his window and offered to move the car. That's when Gelhaus pulled a gun on him and yelled at him to turn the car off, Westbrook said. He said he responded that the car was already off.
"According to Westbrook, Gelhaus returned to his cruiser to write a ticket. Several minutes later, the driver said, Gelhaus asked him to walk back to his cruiser and then pulled a gun on him a second time, asking him if he had any weapons before frisking him.
"Westbrook said he finally asked the deputy why he had pulled him over, with Gelhaus referring to an illegal lane change. Westbrook said that's when he asked the deputy if he was OK. Gelhaus didn't answer, he said.
Why should anyone want to defend this out-of-control, trigger-happy cop?

(12,072 posts)Let us say that you have previously committed a rape. Then you are arrested for bank robbery. You will be tried for the bank robbery and the rape will not be discussed in court. You will be tried for bank robbery, not for your general character.
Based on the very limited amount of information Gelhaus is an asshole, a loose cannon. But the specifics of the event under discussion is a charge of murder, not a charge of being an asshole.
I will wait for more information. That isn't defending him. That is sticking to libeal principles.

(11,064 posts)Gelhaus was a gun expert, according to him and others. Was he as objective as his 11-year veteran fellow cop who did not blow away the kid? Or was he seeking an adrenaline rush from a gun-fight confrontation even if the gun-fight confrontation was one-sided and imaginary one?
The question is not whether he is an "asshole" (your word). We already know that he is a cop.
The question is whether there was legal justification for him to kill the kid.
Not to worry. He's already lawyered up. His lawyer will earn her pay by coming up with all kinds of excuses for him. She'll probably also argue that his propensity to threaten the lives of fellow human beings should not be considered.

(8,514 posts)Who pulls his weapon on a driver while writing a ticket for an illegal lane change, FFS? This guy was ITCHING to shoot somebody. It just so happens, he shot a young kid, who posed no threat whatsoever to anyone. He needs to go to prison.
