I won't attempt to guess why or how or when, but it will happen.
It's my personal opinion that Earth can realistically support no more than a billion people in a sustainable way, and we're already at seven times that number. It may also be that we've already damaged the biosphere so that even population crash all the way back to one billion in the very near future won't be good enough.
