(17,671 posts)(Johnson) also pressed for a joint appearance of the Democratic candidates somewhere in Texas. They arranged the meeting at the airport in Amarillo, where campaign advance men stopped all air traffic during the brief ceremonies so that the candidates could address the crowd. But they had not counted on the Republican-leaning airline pilots, who deliberately ran the engines of their planes in order to drown out the speakers. At the close of the ruined appearance, a photographer snapped a concerned Kennedy placing his hands on Johnsons shoulder, trying to calm his angry, gesticulating running mate.
But this is just off some dude's blog, so there's that.

FEBRUARY 21, 2013
On the campaign trail in 1960, John F. Kennedy was booked to speak at the Amarillo airport. They had paused air traffic for the event, but that didnt keep some Republican pilots from disrupting the speech by running their engines.
This photo from the Amarillo Globe-News shows Kennedy ineffectually trying to placate his running mate Lyndon B. Johnson who was angrily expressing his disapproval of the pilots rudeness

Contrasting himself from LBJ, JFK handled the affair with relaxed aplomb, joking that this must be Nixon arriving. He carried on with his speech, because They cant stop the truth anyway. I dont care how much that engine warms up.
