Bad News for Republicans :The Youth Vote Grew in 2013 and They Voted Democrat
By: Jason Easley

Republicans should be very worried. The youth vote grew in the New Jersey and Virginia gubernatorial elections, and those young people voted Democrat.

In Virginia, the youth vote as a share of the overall electorate increased by 3 points. The Democratic share of the youth vote increased by one percent, while the Republican share of dropped by 14%. Terry McAuliffe beat Ken Cuccinelli 45%-40% among younger voters. In New Jersey, Chris Christie was piling up big overall numbers, but he lost with young voters 51%-49%.

Republicans should be very afraid. Young voters are becoming solidly Democratic. The only demographic that Chris Christie lost in New Jersey was voters age 18-29. It doesn’t appear to matter who is at the top of the ticket, the Republican Party is a major turnoff to young voters right now.

snip//

Young voters showed that they will show up to vote in an off off year election. No one should be surprised if young voters across the country turn out in 2014 to take House back from the Republican Party.

Young voters are here. They’ve voting, and they are supporting the Democratic Party.

You chose a most descriptive and appropriate avatar, though; I'll give you that.

What a desperate attempt to try to impress us with your self-proclaimed intellectual superiority. That sort of behavior is very telling and impresses no one over the age of 14 in a positive manner.

It's the term "Democrat Party" that is grammatically incorrect. Saying you "vote Democrat" is fine. It's been a bumper sticker and button for many years.

"Vote Democratic" sounds stuffy, anyway.

Common usage of "Vote Democrat", as you point out, is perfectly acceptable. Picking on someone who uses it is definitely NOT. Simian was grossly out of line.

the reason why wingnuts say "Democrat" instead of "Democratic" is to try to imply that our party is undemocratic (which is funny, since they're the ones who want less people to vote).

...because as Rush explained, it emphasizes the RAT in Democrat. Others have explained that this way of saying it sends a subliminal message to the brain that the party is full of rodents. I kid you not. That's why they say it that way.

RW ranters will never ever say Democratic. Because it conveys a value as well as a party and they refuse to allow that.

I am a Democrat <noun>. I belong to the Democratic <adjective> Party. I vote Democrat <noun>.

I vote Democrat has an implied "for a." Hence, it is "Vote <for a> Democrat" not "Vote <for a> Democratic."

I think I read that it was in the over 40 crowd. And mostly in women that have been married only once. And especially among those that don't work outside the home. Plus, many women are delaying marriage or choosing to be single or single for longer and these are the women that trend Democrat. It's not the Leave-It-To-Beaver world that conservatives remember where men were the sole bread winners and wifey stayed at home with the kids and voted like her husband did. I had to shake my head when I saw a car in the last election with a Romney/Ryan sticker on the driver side and an Obama/Biden sticker on the passenger side. I could never make a relationship like that work.

presidential elections. There's usually not enough on the ballot to motivate them. But in some jurisdictions, issues like raising the minimum wage, expanding rights to oppressed minority groups, immigration, and pot legalization can account for an uptick in young voter participation. If young people hadn't shown up in VA, Cucinelli most surely would have been elected.

In Takoma Park, MD 16 & 17 year-olds were able to vote for local candidates for the first time this past Tuesday!

28. GOP position on LGBT rights is hurting the GOP with the youth vote
Thu Nov 7, 2013, 08:06 PM
Nov 2013

I have seen some polling that supports the fact that most young people know or are friends with a LGBT person. The concept that the state should take an active role in discriminating against LGBT persons is alien to this age group. The GOP is alienating this age group with its policies on same sex marriage, ENDA and LGBT rights.

In the 1980s the GOP was successful with the youth vote but that group has grown up and now the GOP is having trouble attracting or being relevant to young people. I was in law school in the during the 1980 race and could not understand why so many of my classmates were supporting Reagan and the GOP. I am glad that my children's generation is taking a different viewpoint as to their party identification

30. The GOP is well aware of its problem with young voters
Thu Nov 7, 2013, 08:17 PM
Nov 2013

There was some good polling four years ago from the 2008 election on why young voters were identifying with the Democratic Party. In looking for that polling, I found this 2013 study by the GOP where the GOP's problems with young voters is discussed in great detail http://talkingpointsmemo.com/dc/gop-report-warns-of-party-s-apocalypse-with-young-voters

The Republican Party's troubles with young voters are well known. But a new internal report virtually elevates the threat level to apocalyptic, declaring that the GOP needs a "fundamental re-thinking" of its approach in order to remain viable with the younger generation.

The 95-page report by the College National Republican Committee, based on in-depth research by the Winston Group on voters aged 18-29 nationwide, warns of "a dismal present situation" for the GOP when it comes to Millennial voters.

"Neither technology, nor policy, nor branding alone will fully endear the Republican Party to a generation that has now twice broken for a Democratic candidate by historic margins," the report concludes. "Yet a message and narrative that focuses on economic growth and opportunity cannot exist without substance behind it. [T]here are still many items in the Republican economic agenda that young voters have not been sold on."

The GOP is going to continue to have problems with new or young voters for so long as the GOP continue waging a war on women and LGBT groups.
