Yes, I'm on food stamps, and they were cut.
From $95 a month to $90 a month.
This isn't a commentary on the food stamp cuts, it's just my own experience.

(14,400 posts)that will really cut back on the caviar and filet mignon part of your food budget won't it?
I hate Republicans and pretty much everything those greedy fucks stand for. I hope things improve for you soon.

Meanwhile...one of my relatives is a Teabagger, and gets farm subsidies.
He gets red-faced mad when I bring that up.
Wants to cut "welfare," but his own? Hell no!

(16,993 posts)and corporations like ExxonMobile can continue to hide money overseas, not pay taxes, and indeed get subsidies from the government, right?
I'm sorry that the people who can least afford the hardship are the very ones being hurt the most by it. It's wrong in so many ways.
Sending good thoughts your way, and hoping that this outrageous situation ends soon.

(16,993 posts)People who understand they work for the American PEOPLE, not CORPORATIONS.
Minimum wage must be raised to a level where it is a LIVING WAGE. Just picking an arbitrary number like $10, $11, or whatever won't do it. We need to see what it really costs to survive, and set a minimum wage that allows that to happen.
Same goes for food stamps. Instead of helping a little, they ought to provide enough food for the family so they don't have to starve just a little less than going completely without food. $95 doesn't hardly buy anything at the grocery story today.
Since the country still hasn't "recovered" from the recession, it would seem we need a Recovery Act II, along with jobs bills, changes in tax code so everyone pays their fair share, etc. I'm afraid the only way that will happen is for the American people to start paying attention and vote these idiots out of office.

Rationally, I understand that I qualify, emotionally I cannot bring myself to do so.
I have a feeling there are at least a couple million like me.

(1,557 posts)It's a horrible thing. People have to eat, and they're told things like "the rates went back to 'pre-stimulus' levels" but meanwhile, food prices haven't. To me it's downright heartless to cut food stamps now.

(5,957 posts)It was passed as part of the Economic Recovery Act in 2009 with a provision that it would end on November 1, 2013. On that date, funding was to return to previous levels.

(10,942 posts)A family needs even more. We need to work our asses off to get rid of as many republicans as possible in the 2014 elections, they are toxic.

(30,947 posts)I went online to apply for food stamps and found I was only eligible for $35 a month. I figured that would not buy too much. I have not done it yet, but now if I decide to pursue that claim, I would probably only be eligible for about $30 a month. Big deal! Good thing I am a vegetarian and do not need to buy meat.
