(24,096 posts)and those ads appear here quite frequently.
So I don't think it's so much personal browsing that displays particular ads, it's more likely the word content of DU itself. ?? or a mix.
jberryhill
(62,444 posts)Your browsing history likely includes political sites, right?
I mean, that's really not subject to dispute.
It's not as if ads are that finely targeted to "wants to impeach Obama" as opposed to "interested in political subjects".
But, yes, word content counts. The OP is triggering those ads, complaining about it, and likely causing them to be displayed on this very page.
Whisp
(24,096 posts)I'm not one to be curious what Freepers and the like are saying, I already know.
But if others take r/w site posts/links and bring them here, those do include 'impeach Obama' etc.,
Anyway, this is how capitalism works.
jberryhill
(62,444 posts)Your browsing history indicates "political interests".
The bucket of ads that get served for "political interests" isn't sorted by "left wing", "right wing", etc., it's just whatever is sold for "key this ad for 'political interests'".
Oh, and online degree programs. Study at home. College courses online. Can I get a degree online?

(5,756 posts)Did you miss all the "I'm a Morm0n" adds during Romeny's run for President.
The ads are often "sold" in bulk as revenue to the site. The sites don't really get to pick and choose which ads out of the bulk adds they get paid to run on their site.
As was also mentioned, Google has a lot to do with which ads are presented to you as a result of your search history and site-visit history.
It's not "crazy" it's the way the web works.
I'm sure that people at Free Republic or Redstate get pissed when they see automatic banner ads on those sites that are completely outside what would be content or opinion on their sites.
This comes up over and over again here and elsewhere. The right thing to do is be happy the ads are showing up here paying for DU and not having any real marketing effect. In other words, when the ads show up here it's a waste of those organizations' advertising dollars.
kestrel91316
(51,666 posts)for whatever random stuff the user had googled, but that the site owner had no say in the ad content AND WAS FORBIDDEN TO EVER DISCUSS COMPLAINTS ABOUT AD CONTENT PUBLICLY. So don't expect the Du admins to talk about this. They don't determine ad content - your browser search history does.

You're probably thinking of Gmail and regular Google searches, not forum agreements with Google
jberryhill
(62,444 posts)The "site agreement" as you put it, simply deeds over a piece of real estate that is selected and put there based on your IP address; cookies, and so on. That's why you can click on "adchoices" in the ad, and control what YOU will see.

I click the hell out of them, then close all the windows that pop up.
then I sign in, and don't see them cause I have ad blockers plus a star.
If you use an app like AdBlock, or Ghostery, you won't even see the ads.
or
you could buy a star for any amount of money and get no ads.

(62,444 posts)For the sake of Internet archaeologists:
"you have a banner on your site for Ross Stores ? Now I also see Old Navy . Are you aware of the fact that these stores model themselves after Walmart... shame on you DU !"
The Straight Story
(48,121 posts)If there are inappropriate ads it is normal to bring them to the attention of the folks who run the site. Google ads, cookies, etc can affect what you see and if you see something offensive you should bring it to their attention so that they can take a gander. Spend some time reading over ask the admins and such.
But I don't think you really care that much, given your other thread recently.
You are either trying to play the liberal purity test game or coming from the right trying to show that liberals aren't perfect in your eyes therefore any arguments they make don't pan out. Which is, of course, a really lame attempt at arguing philosophy.
Your recent concerns seemed to be centered around this website. An imperfect place to be sure, just ask people who have been here awhile. I can't think of any place, person, politician, etc that I would consider perfect (especially myself).
If all you want to do as a noob here is bash the site, it may not be the right place for you - especially if that is where all of your energy is focused. Try starting some threads on issues, your thoughts on them, etc - you will still find things are not perfect, but you might actually have some conversations that are important and can lead to better things.
I have used my time at DU to help me learn a lot, which has helped me with my radio show. Some things piss me off here to no end, but overall you will find good people, with their hearts in the right place, trying to discuss issues like adults. We might fight, complain, really tick each other off, but I don't see you having been here long enough to really get that. So switch your focus for a spell and see how it goes.

(34,648 posts)REI rarely leaves anyone alone. I thought I just got the ads because they're big here in Alaska. I guess it's from constantly going on their website. (8,646 posts)You've been here since 2005 and you just now figured out that not only are there ads, the ads aren't always for the best companies/products/services. You managed to have missed the gazillion and one threads on this over the years....you don't know there is an admin forum...yet you have over 2000 posts. And you haven't figured out that purchasing a star for any amount will get rid of these ads you find so offensive.
