Hackensack's homeless Samaritan loses benefits over $850 he found and turned in

Source: Bergen Record

James Brady, the formerly homeless man who earned national praise for turning in $850 he found on the street in Hackensack, learned the hard way this week that no good deed goes unpunished.

Brady was denied General Assistance and Medicaid benefits by the Hackensack Human Services Department through Dec. 31 because he failed to report new income he received. The income, according to the agency, was the cash he found on Main Street last spring and that police returned to him in October after no one claimed it.

... Brady, a former news photographer and market data analyst, fell on hard times more than a decade ago when he became unemployed and suffered from depression. He was supposed to be at the World Trade Center on Sept. 11 for a business event and the knowledge that he could have been killed traumatized him, he said.

... Brady has an appointment with Legal Services of New Jersey on Tuesday and hopes someone there can help him restore his benefits. As a frequent advocate for the homeless population in Hackensack, Brady said he also hopes that the department will be more sensitive toward clients.

2. Well look what he used the money on.....

He bought toilet paper, napkins, a bath mat and the sandwich that he craved the day he received the money.......

It seems that honesty doesn't pay, but crime does just look at Wall Street.

3. Social Services have the worst rules and punish those who try to get off the system...

It happens in every state...you make some cash (which is maybe enough to help with a utility bill or maybe a car repair) and the next month, they take it away from you. There's is no way to 'get a leg up' and get OFF the system, unless you make a BIG chunk or find that middle class job that everyone says is out there for you...
You even get punished for things like going back to school, or heaven forbid you need a car and someone is willing to give you one - it better not be worth more than $2000, because you will be expected to sell the car, live off the $ till you are destitute and then apply again...

6. I cannot even fathom

how much of a dick you'd have to be to do this.

That level of dicketry is beyond my scope of imagination.

I really hope that, after his appointment, they give him his benefits back. I hope it's just a screwup by some pencil pusher.

7. This is the rule in all states, afaik.

If you don't report income, it's fraudulent, and you lose benefits. Anyone who is shocked by this is less-than-familiar with the system, shall we say.

Heaven forbid, we can't help people who commit fraud can we? Corporations, sure, but people? Heavens, no!

9. It does not pay to be honest in the US. Politicians, corporations, etc

Can lie and get ahead because of that.

This man should have never even turned in or told anyone about the money.

The US has lost any moral compass it might have had ages ago, this is just further evidence of that.
