Cronkite memorial called 'labor of love'

Dr. Bob Vartabedian had many visions for Missouri Western State University when he came to the college as president in 2008.

One of those visions was in finding a way to honor Walter Cronkite, St. Joseph native and the nation's most trusted newsman during its most pivotal moments of the 1960s to the 1980s.

Dr. Vartabedian's vision becomes reality next week, when Missouri Western unveils the Walter Cronkite Memorial.

“It's a labor of love to do a memorial for someone like Walter Cronkite, who is really worthy of being memorialized," Dr. Vartabedian said. “That's the bottom line. You start with a great person, and then it just evolves in a very positive way that I think this has.

I will remember that forever, along with his wonderful coverage of the Apollo 11 landing, which more or less had him speechless.


My first memories of Cronkite was hosting of The 20th Century a weekly historic news magazine. It was obligatory viewing in my home.

Surely, CBS and Cronkite at their best. And then there was Murrow. The fact that CBS made him interview Hollywood stars in payment for his cutting edge journalism is despicable. Watch George Clooney's Good Night and Good Luck for fairly accurate details.
