HEADS UP: Wikileaks Leaks Key TPP Documents

Today, 13 November 2013, WikiLeaks released the secret negotiated draft text for the entire TPP (Trans-Pacific Partnership) Intellectual Property Rights Chapter. The TPP is the largest-ever economic treaty, encompassing nations representing more than 40 per cent of the world’s GDP. The WikiLeaks release of the text comes ahead of the decisive TPP Chief Negotiators summit in Salt Lake City, Utah, on 19-24 November 2013. The chapter published by WikiLeaks is perhaps the most controversial chapter of the TPP due to its wide-ranging effects on medicines, publishers, internet services, civil liberties and biological patents. Significantly, the released text includes the negotiation positions and disagreements between all 12 prospective member states.

The TPP is the forerunner to the equally secret US-EU pact TTIP (Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership), for which President Obama initiated US-EU negotiations in January 2013. Together, the TPP and TTIP will cover more than 60 per cent of global GDP.

It looks to me like his surprise is that those that do support a politician, a political party but CAN NOT oppose anything that politician supports, havent jumped into this thread to support the President's position on the TPP.

Proponents here of the TPP argue something like this: "How can you oppose it until you read it?" Which I equate to having a gun pointed at your head and have them tell you to not to worry, just wait to see what happens."

but I've got nagging doubts. The TPP reeks of Clinton (either one) and the secrecy of it is a slap to the faces of the myriad folks who'll suffer it's consequences. The secrecy of it is but one facet of this thrust to level the world economic arena. Already we're seeing some jobs being brought BACK to our shores now that there's a workforce desperate enough to do ANY sort of work for ANY sort of wages. THAT'S been the aim of the game for decades. And you watch - the PTB and their corporate owners are gonna CROW about how they've led the charge to bring jobs back to this country. And the rubes of this nation (and we're not just talking Tea-Baggers here) are gonna grin broadly and profess that we do indeed live in "the greatest nation on earth".

Hats off to Wikileaks for letting those most impacted get a clear look at the the guillotine blade just before it drops.

They believe, those who are orchestrating all of this, that they are different species to the masses. They truly think that the people are there to serve them.

Who would have thought, that America with all its rhetoric about 'freedom' and 'equality' could have been so easily manipulated?

And it is all happening with hardly a whimper.

Thanks for seeing it and expressing it so clearly.

And thanks to the Whistle Blowers and to orgs like Wikileaks for having to courage to try to warn us.

The leak shows the United States seeking to impose the most extreme demands of Big Pharma and Hollywood, Public Citizen said, despite the express and frequently universal opposition of U.S. trade partners. Concerns raised by TPP negotiating partners and many civic groups worldwide regarding TPP undermining access to affordable medicines, the Internet and even textbooks have resulted in a deadlock over the TPP Intellectual Property Chapter, leading to an impasse in the TPP talks, Public Citizen said. Wed Nov 13, 2013, 05:33 PM
Nov 2013

these two are the two parts of the pincher movement.

TTIP = Transatlantic Trade & Investment Partnership. Here's George Monbiot on the Guardian about it.

Remember that referendum about whether we should create a single market with the United States? You know, the one that asked whether corporations should have the power to strike down our laws? No, I don't either. Mind you, I spent 10 minutes looking for my watch the other day before I realised I was wearing it. Forgetting about the referendum is another sign of ageing. Because there must have been one, mustn't there? After all that agonising over whether or not we should stay in the European Union, the government wouldn't cede our sovereignty to some shadowy, undemocratic body without consulting us. Would it?

The purpose of the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership is to remove the regulatory differences between the US and European nations. I mentioned it a couple of weeks ago. But I left out the most important issue: the remarkable ability it would grant big business to sue the living daylights out of governments which try to defend their citizens. It would allow a secretive panel of corporate lawyers to overrule the will of parliament and destroy our legal protections. Yet the defenders of our sovereignty say nothing.

Which brings up an interesting quandry for republicans: Do they let him have it, to please their business masters, or do they oppose it to slap down the scary black man in their White House? Or, to put it another way, who do they want to screw over most: President Obama, or the American People, and isn't there a way to do both at the same time?

Except for the Chamber of Commerce types, of course. A lot of Democrats (excluding Baucus, of course) are already leery of so-called "free trade" agreements.

Depending on how it shakes out, it might have some bearing on whether the eventual Democratic candidate in 2016 chooses to identify with the President, or distance themselves -- which might be a little problematic, should that candidate be Hillary.

It'd be a real hoot if House republicans, in their hatred of the President, actually wound up doing something good for American workers.

Good to see Wikileaks has not gone quietly into the night.

But where are the usual gang of frightened authoritarians that would rather not know anything if its going to stain their view of the wonderful authorities in charge of their lives? I guess they all have their heads stuck in the sand right now for fear of actually hearing something they don't like. If you listen carefully you can hear from the ground muffled curses at those "traitors" Snowden and Manning.

I realize that these are only working descriptions, and they've deferred assigning specific Chapter and Verse numbers until later (I do the same thing), but the implication is that there are probably Chapters "AA" thru "PP" (and probably some more). That's at least 16 Chapters of crap.

As bad as this Chapter is, I can't help but think there are even nastier surprises yet to be discovered.

And without the other complementing chapters, it's hard to judge.

But the proponents do themselves no favors by acting in such secrecy.

They want to deny "...a patent solely on the basis that the product did not result in enhanced efficacy of the known product.”

Big pharma loses money up there, as well as in other countries where our overly restrictive patent laws work to insure usurious profits for pharmaceutical cos, because they lose lawsuits which try to maintain those onerous conditions.

Get this signed, and one might say good bye to inexpensive prescriptions coming across the border, or even the advantage of going other places for medical care.

And rather a lot of other freedoms based on the interpretation of patent laws in favor of corporate profits and power, and that's just in this one little section, it seems.

114. Since anyone who questions anything AT ALL that Obama does is now an "ideologue",
Thu Nov 14, 2013, 10:10 AM
Nov 2013

I believe that is the poo to be flung, not actual support of the TPP.

ideo·logue
noun \ˈī-dē-ə-ˌlȯg, -ˌläg\

: someone who very strongly supports and is guided by the ideology of a particular group

: an impractical idealist : theorist

: an often blindly partisan advocate or adherent of a particular ideology

The irony - it burns!
