I used to tell people with the straightest face that I truly adore men but I'm just not quite sure they should be allowed to vote. Most people didn't know the historical background of that statement and were offended, but the ones who knew found it funny.

That they fairly worshipped us, put us on a pedestal, considered us the better sex even; but nobody could convince them we were fit to vote.

A hundred years ago and earlier, most of society considered it impossible for women to excel at more than one function. If she developed her intellect at all, her parenting and wifely skills were bound to suffer for it. That was society's excuse for keeping her subservient. Even some of the female leaders in women's and worker's rights were against female suffrage as "unnatural".
