SEATTLE -- Boeing machinists overwhelmingly rejected a contentious contract proposal Wednesday night that would have exchanged concessions for decades of secure jobs.
When the ballots were counted, 67 percent of the machinists voted "no" on the contract.
Members of the International Association of Machinists District 751 had called for a no vote, protesting Boeing Co.'s push to end a traditional pension plan and increase their health care costs. Workers would have received a $10,000 signing bonus if they approved the deal.
District 751 President Tom Wroblewski called it an emotional decision but said union members should consider what's best for their families. Some of the machinists voting Wednesday are in the Portland, Ore., area.

(4,631 posts)In fact, it looks like the misery will be spread out among the taxpayers. The state will be offering billions in tax breaks to keep Boeing there. I didn't see any details in the article, but I suspect the workers are a bit better off than those that will be ponying up the money to try and keep them in their jobs. Not enough details to make a guess and a third of the workers voted to keep their jobs at home.
