Teacher Slugs Middle Schooler Who Mocked His Favorite Football Team

Texas middle school student Reginald Wells was knocked out with a punch to the face by a teacher last Friday after Wells cracked a joke about the teacher's favorite football team.

Wells, who attends Willie Ray Smith Middle School in Beaumont, says he stopped to talk to an assistant teacher from his math class and joked about the teacher's favorite football team, pushing the teacher's shoulder after he said the joke. According to another teacher who was in the hallway, the assistant teacher reacted by punching 12-year-old Wells in the face, knocking him out.

From 12News:

&quot The principal) said Reginald was punched, in the shoulder, and then hit two times and uppercut, and then slid across the floor," Adrianne [Wells, Reginald's mother,] said. "It weighed heavy on my heart, because I've never put my hands on my son."

Wells, who is four-foot-eleven and 80 lbs., woke up on the floor seconds later with no recollection of what had happened.

Not Florida

I can't believe he didn't work the body.

I'd bet money that the football team the kid insulted was a high school team.

An assistant teacher or a teacher's assistant one wonders. Sad to say, but I guess we need to do some physiological screening before hiring adults to work with children in schools. I mean, either that or wait until one of these hotheads knocks out and kills a student. Dunno...just sad and pathetic on the adults part.

Can't take a joke? Knock out a 12 year old kid...it will make you feel like a BIG MAN!

Someone with those kinds of rage issues and that lack of impulse control shouldn't be working arounds kids. Or people in general.

What if the NRA got their "arm the teachers" rule in place like they wanted after Sandy Hook?

The Miami Dolphins are at the center of football's biggest controversy.
"But forget all of that. The franchise is now at the center of this disgusting bullying case involving teammates Richie Incognito and Jonathan Martin. The owner, general manager and head coach are bumbling around like Moe, Larry, and Curly. Everyone is about to get hauled into the principal's office, and when it's all done, there likely will be firings and/or suspensions."

The Jacksonville Jaguars have won one game.
"For starters, the Jags play in Jacksonville — a city that's like 800 square miles wide and yet the only fun thing to do is drive to Daytona. The stadium is a canyon that covers up seats and houses a team that is 1-8 this season and has won only three of its past 25 games. If you don't count a pair of victories over the same team (the Titans), the Jags have lost 20 in a row."

The Tampa Bay Bucs have won one game.
"Then came rumors that the head coach — the star of billboards throughout town calling for his firing — rigged a vote so the quarterback would not be named captain. And now that franchise quarterback is with another franchise because he apparently couldn't work an alarm clock or a 7-yard out pass. The Bucs have turned to Napoleon Dynamite look-alike Mike Glennon, who may or may not be the answer."

The whole article is a good read, from the Tampa Bay Times no less

My Cowboys have their own problems which I think is all around the coaching staff for the most part. You can only blame injuries so long.

To be honest, I don't know anyone who follows any Florida team. We have Packers fans, Saints, Rams, Giants, there is even lady who is a Bears fan LOL

coaching is a problem for them - no doubt about that. But . . . 32nd in points (less than 13 per game) and 32nd in total yards - so no surprise that they are 1-8. The leading rusher - Maurice Jones-Drew - has only 430 yards in 9 games - less than 3 per carry. No one else even has 100 yards. Receiving is not much better - leading receiver has just over 600 yards.

A lot of talk about moving the team does not help with the fan base.

I can't imagine a worse start for a team.

I do not follow the Dolphins or Bucs at all other than to check scores so have no idea why their year has gone so awry.

Most folk I know here follow the college teams more than NFL. I have lived here for over 30 years and this has been the case since moving here. Many do follow NFL teams from wherever they moved from more than Florida NFL teams.

Looking for Central Florida to go to a BCS bowl - in Miami. Will be there as well as where ever the Huskers play.

My daughter is UCF alumni and my son is there now. So we have season tickets and are enjoying a great year so far.

they would stop calling an "assistant teacher" a teacher. An assistant is not a teacher. Hopefully the "other teacher in the hallway" stepped in to help the kid.

The assistant teacher was fired and escorted from the premises, but not arrested.

I expect the arrest will happen when the parent files charges, if not before.

Beaumont Independent School District sources have confirmed that 24-year-old Michael Fisher is the teacher who is accused of punching a 12-year-old student in the face.

The reported attack took place on Friday, November 8 at Willie Ray Smith Middle School.

Seventh grader Reginald Wells claims Fisher, who was an assistant math teacher, hit him, busting his lip, and knocking him out.

That he's described as connected with math implies he's more than someone who just comes in a class to be told what to do to help.

I do know that we don't have "assistant" teachers. We have student teachers, we have substitute teachers, we have educational assistants, and we have teachers. I teach middle school. The only certified teachers in that list are teachers, unless the substitute happens to be a retired teacher.

Whatever the semantics a particular state or district may use, "assistants" aren't teachers, and assistants are supposed to be working under real teachers. Good reporting would make that clear.

Regardless, I'm sure this guy is going to experience appropriate consequences for his actions, as he should.

No jury in Texas will convict, because reminding a Cowboy fan that Tony Romo still exists is clearly provocation.
