(22,239 posts)Their food prices aren't all that great, although they do seem to have a lot more convenience food than other grocery stores. Perhaps that is where the difference is since I usually prepare food rather than rely on convenience foods (hot pockets, dinner in a bag, etc).

(16,844 posts)I shopped at Wal-Mart for the last time several days ago. I always felt guilty for shopping there, and I'd mostly cut it out, but I was forced to the other day. It's a long story I won't go into, but they pissed me off royally that day and I made a vow that I'd never buy a fucking thing in a Wal-Mart ever again.
Shopping there doesn't save money, it's a time-saver more than anything else because you can pick up your groceries and lots of other things at the same time. But I actually save money when I buy groceries at the grocery store and go to the dollar store or other specialty store for the rest of my items. So from now on I'll save money and I won't contribute to that horrible company anymore.

(2,529 posts)HEB came back with HEB Plus and their line of gourmet and deli foods and department store items. Here in our town, HEB is more popular than the Super Walmart. I used to like HEB. Right-wingers boycotted them at one time for their support of Planned Parenthood and their CEO supported liberal causes. Then, he went to the dark side and started hedging his bets, donating to both Democrats and Republicans.

(2,529 posts)I'm not much of a carnivore, but my family is and Walmart isn't into selling organic meat, lean cuts or quality meat, period. They have no fresh seafood section to speak of and I really prefer HEB's fresh produce to Walmart's. Like their meat department, Walmart's produce isn't big on organic or variety.

(16,916 posts)The vast majority of household staples that I purchase each month are less expensive at Walmart. I've done my research.
They push crap (but it's the same crap as everywhere else), and they need to pay their employees a living wage, but they are definitely cheap.

(9,865 posts)They don't make enough to in fact shop at Walmart.
That's why Walmart's sales are down.
Toon makes it seem like when Walmart comes to town, everything evens out in the end. Far from it.
