I see 3 outcomes of all this.
Either...
1. Rush leaves the air, blames "the left/liberals/feminazis/some other fantasy creation of his," and ends up at Faux "news."
2. Limbaugh checks into rehab, "finds Jay-zus," goes back on the air as if nothing had happened. (Ted Haggard route)
3. Goes off the air, ends up dying alone at his mansion of some obesity-related ailment like a heart attack.

(129,180 posts)but doubt that he would go on Faux. They couldn't afford him. Maybe satellite. He could have a whole "Rushbo" channel with nothing but hate spewed 24/7 by his hand-picked zombies.
But it may take some time (like how long it took BecKKK to be taken off the air) for this to happen.

(60,338 posts)If goes off the air, it will not be through any excercise that violated his rights, it will simply be the free market that the right embraces. Supply and demand, if you don't have the supply of advertisers, there is no demand for your show.

(82,849 posts)He will just bull ahead, wait for the kerfuffle to die down, and go on as if nothing happened, until the next time he swats a hornets' nest.
The problem for this vile human being this go-round is the one thing that is not in his control, and that's whether the kerfuffle dies down. For some reason, I think this time we're not going to let it go. He's clearly been hurt by his actions. It's time to make sure he shoulders the full consequences and responsibility for his vile words.
In which case, number 3 is my bet.

(31,706 posts)rushbo's a loss leader...he draws people to hundreds of antiquated AM stations and that's where he is most valuable. Controversy is what he thrives on and it attracts attention to his stations. Clear Channel and Premiere (his syndicator) are standing strong behind him since they have millions invested in him and can't afford to lose what he brings to their dying stations. The more likely scenario is waiting a year or two for these corporates to go bankrupt due to their own largess or when rushbo takes one oxy pill too many and goes toes up behind that "golden" microphone...

(7,875 posts)Last night I read a segment of an article someone re-posted from The Blaze, in which one of Limbaugh's advertisers came crawling back and Limbaugh told them (through his agent) to get lost. Like he's making an example of them: "This is what happens when you defy Old El-Rushbo".
Now, I am considering the source, but it does highlight the fact that Limbaugh is not subject to the usual rules of broadcast media: The right wing zillionaires who pay his salary, own the network that carries him, and many of the radio stations he is broadcast on have an agenda. Selling advertising is nice, but they won't go broke if Limbaugh's program has to run commercial-free. He serves a purpose, which is keeping the right wingers in the 99% mad at liberals, and supporting policies that benefit the 1%. Even if they don't make a dime on his show, as long as he keeps doing his job it's a net gain for them.
The only way Limbaugh goes off the air is if his ratings drop to the point where he's no longer cost effective, and I see no evidence that that's about to happen.

(1,138 posts)Conservatives start to boycott all the Liberal media advertisers. Then what? This is why NYT v Sullivan should be reversed so libel and slander laws again apply to the media. Then the woman could sue Rush for damages. And vice versa.

(301 posts)his ratings drop, getting their message out is worth the money lost. It is a very small price to pay for these billionaires.

(7,875 posts)If Rush Limbaugh runs his mouth and nobody will listen to him, has he made a sound? Not one that's going to be worth 40 million dollars to anyone, but still I'm confident they won't dump him until his ratings have dropped into the abyss and stayed there for a while. Until that happens his job is safe.

(3,539 posts)Without his type of A**hattery the level of fear and hate may subside and mor may see the right wing for what it is.
Down't doubt that the RNC won't support him.
