'Pit bull' label disputed in Wilton case (woman whose arms were eaten by her own dog)

Is it really just splitting dog hairs?

The Board of Selectmen on Monday night discussed whether the dog that attacked and seriously injured a town resident was properly labeled a pit bull.

Police Captain John Lynch updated the board on the Nov. 11 attack that cost Anne Murray, 65, all of one arm and the other up to the elbow. She also had bite wounds all over her body. A town police officer shot and killed the dog.

"The dog involved is in the group of dogs commonly referred to as a "pit bull,' however my understanding is that pit bull is not a breed itself, but is part of the terrier breed,'' said Lt. Don Wakeman, the police department.

According to veterinary records, "Tuxedo,'' the dog that attacked Murray, is listed as a Staffordshire Terrier.

....The cross of Bulldog and Terrier was called by several names, including Bull-and-Terrier Dog, Pit Bull, or Half and Half. Later, it assumed the name of Staffordshire Bull Terrier in England. These dogs began to find their way into America as early as 1870, where they became known as the Pit Dog, then the American Bull Terrier, and still later as the Yankee Terrier.[2]....

I adopted a "vicious unadoptable" dog who had been returned 3 times for biting and she would rather die than attack me. I had the flu once and forgot to feed or water her for awhile (days?), all she did was lie next to me and poop down the basement. her main complaint she has is that she isn't hugged enough. I have to stop whatever several times a day to hug her.
This dog must have been taunted to make it "appear" vicious, attacking people is not an every day thing for a dog not in a pack.
Her boys may be a danger to society for their training habits.

Live with it. Oh, and let me know about your dogs, Xema. Labels being what they are.

Zowine said in an email to the Connecticut Post that coverage of the Murray case has created "mass hysteria" and resulted in "people dumping their dogs in huge numbers now because they're worried because of the `pit bull' attack."

Most dogs in area animal shelters are pit bulls, and the dogs are particularly difficult to place, officials said. "It is a bit harder to find a foster home for any bully breed dog due to the negative stereotypes and we focus on all of them," Trapp said.

Fox News scared drones who can't think for themselves. News at 11. (that's one hour after 10, morons)

From same article:

But Stacy Rameor, the animal control officer in Greenwich, and Allyson Halm, president of Adopt-a-Dog Inc., said they haven't seen an influx of pit bulls being surrendered since the Wilton attack.

About 75 percent of the calls Adopt-a-Dog gets from owners looking to surrender a dog involve pit bulls or pit bull mixes, Halm said. Adopt-a-Dog, founded in Greenwich in 1981, is an animal rescue organization serving Connecticut and New York.

If there's blood on anyone's hands here, it's the people passing off dogs bred specifically for fighting as harmless "nanny dogs."

a Chihuahua. Every one I have ever been around was an ankle biter. Most pit bulls are gentle. My Rotties were the most gentle dogs I have ever owned. They would take meat from my grandkids without even touching them. I wouldn't dare do that with my Collie. They would lose a finger.

With the logic behind pitbull bans we should euthanize all humans simply because a small percentage of them kill.

I just can't imagine what happened unless they were training this to be a fighting dog, then the first thing the dog does is try and disable it's opponent before going in for the kill. I still think that the sons have to be help responsible, most dogs just don't do this, at least to people. I keep my dog away from small animals because she is a hunter and will kill them, quickly, quietly, but still dead, She has killed several mice around my house, she hunts them down and breaks their necks. She also chases cats and squirrels. Since killing those animals is frowned on, I keep her from being able to do that - the lead she has goes up to the tree, but not quite. cats just stay out of her reach. I don't bring any of them into my house and keep her on a lead or leash outside. When I went for surgery, I boarded my dog, but if something happened, pretty much everyone, even the police (we walk by the station on our way to the park) have met her and know she is a barker but not biter of people.

I have owned two Rottweilers and two pit bulls. All of them were gentle dogs, but unfortunately, one of the pits was aggressive toward other dogs and cats. My brother had him when he was a puppy and tried to train him to be aggressive. He liked people though. I used to take him with me to the office when I had to work weekends, and all my co-workers loved him.

The one type of dog that has been shown to be more dangerous than other types of dogs is unneutered males.

Staffordshire terriers ARE pit bulls.

And I noticed they allowed the pit bull rescuer to spread more propaganda about ATTS, which is a junk test.
