OMG the Big Island Of Hawaii just passed it's GMO Bill

OMG GMO Bill 113 Passed!

SUBHEAD: OMG WE DID IT!!! GMO BILL 113 HAS PASSED! Mahalo Hawaii.

WOOHOO! WE DID IT! BILL #113 has passed the final reading by the full council. The bill will now go to our honorable Mayor Billy Kenoi who has 10 business days to uphold the will of the people and the Hawai`i County Council or to veto the bill sending it back to the
council for further consideration.

We ask for your continued support on the following two items: Write a letter to thank our councilmembers for protecting the health and preservation of our community and protection of Hawai's agricultural lands, encourage our Mayor Billy Kenoi to sign Bill 113 into law.

GMO on their Island! Lucky Peeps! All we got was for the GMOs to Show us their POISON.. and stop spraying around People!

"The Hawaii County Council passed a bill on Tuesday that bans biotech companies from taking up root on the Big Island and prohibits the expansion of genetically altered crops. (The papaya industry is exempt from the bill.)

The bill passed 6 to 3.

Mayor Billy Kenoi hasn’t taken a public position on the bill, but he could potentially veto it, sending it back to the county council. The council can override a veto with a vote of six members.

Passage of Bill 113, which has sparked vigorous opposition from the farming industry, comes three days after Kauai pushed forward legislation that increases regulations of biotech."

9. A big FAIL for Monsanto! Wow!

Monsanto spent millions to successfully delude the typically progressive voters in Washington state into believing their food costs would skyrocket if a designation of "GMO" had to be added to food labels!

Monsanto money buys WA election
This is NOT what democracy looks like. In a replay of California’s narrowly defeated labeling initiative last fall, a handful of corporations effectively bought Washington state’s election to label genetically engineered (GE) foods.

In the face of impressive grassroots support and fundraising, pesticide and Big Food corporations spent $22 million to defeat I-522 — more than any campaign in the state’s history and the equivalent of $30 per voter. As the largest single contributor, Monsanto led the charge. Yet despite being heavily outspent, the initiative was defeated by a small margin.

There's no doubt that the huge infusion of cash mattered. In early September, polls showed that 66% of Wasingtonians supported I-522. But eight weeks and $18.7 million of opposition spending later, just enough votes swung the other way.

...but beware.

The TPP (Trans Pacific Trade Treaty) currently being "negotiated" in secret by the Obama Administration may supersede local laws that interfere with a Global Corporation's Right to Make a Profit.

Much attention has been turned in recent months to the fact that the agro-chemical/GMO industry -- corporate giants Dow, Pioneer DuPont, Syngenta, Monsanto, BASF -- have been using Hawaii since the 1990s as one of their main testing grounds for experiments engineering new pesticide-crop combos. On the "Garden Island" of Kauai, the industry controls over 15,000 acres of prime agricultural land, which they drench with over 17 tons of restricted-use pesticides each year, and likely at least five times that amount in non-restricted pesticides that may be equally as harmful (such as glyphosate).

<snip>

At the international level, through the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP) these same chemical corporations are seeking to lock us in to arrangements that guarantee their profit interests will not be impeded by pesky democratic governments protecting people's health or other common interests. The TPP is a highly secretive international agreement being negotiated under the pretext of "trade" between twelve Asian and Pacific Rim countries, including the United States. If passed, it will amount to perhaps the biggest corporate power-grab in history, putting the rights of corporations above those of elected governments and sovereign nations.

Under the cryptic title of "Investor State Dispute Settlement" (ISDS), foreign corporations could challenge national and local laws and regulations that undermine their expected profits, holding tax-payers liable for these losses. Challenges could be brought for everything from attempts to regulate pesticide use to health warnings on cigarettes. Governments would be tried in private offshore tribunals that lack transparency and due process.
