CARACAS (Reuters) - Venezuelan lawmakers granted President Nicolas Maduro yearlong decree powers on Tuesday that he says are essential to regulate the economy and stamp out corruption but adversaries view as a power grab.
Hundreds of supporters of the ruling Socialist Party cheered outside the National Assembly as the so-called Enabling Law was passed, while a recording of Maduro's late predecessor, Hugo Chavez, singing Venezuela's anthem rang out inside the hall.
The power to pass laws without congressional approval gives Maduro a political victory in the run-up to December 8 municipal elections, although he still faces a severely distorted economy with embarrassing product shortages and inflation surging to nearly 55 percent.

My prediction: Things will be worse and he'll be complaining it's somebody else's fault so he needs even more power.

Ranchemp.
(1,991 posts)I'll hazard a guess that it'll be much worse and he'll want an extension of the decree powers.
If he truly wants to fight corruption, he should concentrate on the massive mismanagement and rampant corruption within his own regime, but, we know that'll never happen, can't be admitting that the govt is broken, so instead, he'll blame it on the foreign devil (U.S.) and capitalist business owners as usual.
He'll also use these new powers on his political opponents to ensure the ruling party remains firmly entrenched.
Just my prediction of course, but I'll bet I'm right.
