The first TWO days worth of shows plus the late show the night before are already sold out. They show times start at 9:30 AM. Jeez. I haven't looked yet. Will there be six different formats again for this release?

(5,294 posts)I love the book, having read it several times (and listened to the audiobook version of it a few more times on cross-country road trips), but I hated the first movie.
In their efforts to make another Lord of the Rings super-EPIC, they forgot what worked with LotR. Where LotR removed many lovely components that worked in a book, but took away from the narrative, the Hobbit series, having decided to expand what would have been a good two-part movie into a three-parter, had to find all sorts of things to pad with. And along the way, they forgot that Hobbit was a cute children's fantasy.
Now, to be honest, I have to admit there was one thing about seeing the movie I didn't hate: my small-town local theatre threw in free popcorn.

(27,556 posts)Hobbit pt 1 was Jackson's best effort since LOTR, pt. 1.
I enjoyed it immensely as pure, unadulterated cinema (and not a bad adaptation)...

(3,922 posts)But The Hobbit should NOT be separated into three movies. The book isn't long enough for three parts.

(6,932 posts)which is where the extra non-Hobbit material is coming from. 2 would have been better with the appendices' extras (Radagast, etc.), but the studio wanted a 3rd. It's a cash grab.

(90,673 posts)I probably won't pass on it, because I want to take the grandkid as I did last year.
Honestly, though, one of the best things I did for him was to insist on reading The Hobbit to him before we saw the first movie -- Even though he was only 8 at the time he really caught on to the differences and wanted to talk about them. Sheesh, if Jackson wanted to pad out The Hobbit, which is a children's book, he could have tossed in Tom Bombadil and Lady Goldberry instead.
Oh well, in for a penny, in for a pound. I'll see all 3 parts.
