The one which was based on specific questions asked of Mitt Romney that demonstrated he did/does not understand how contraceptives work? The one where Rachel Maddow used satire and facts to illustrate how ignorant many men are about the subject of contraceptives?

I thought it was funny at the time and now re-watching it, and thinking about the recent public discussions of contraceptives and women's health care, I realize how abysmally ignorant most men are on the entire subject.

Perhaps you should watch the clip all the way through and think about that.

Sat Mar 10, 2012, 02:38 PM
Mar 2012

In their lifetimes. Men on average know next to nothing about women's sexuality and very few men bother to attempt to learn anything about the biology of the women in their lives.

Why should ignorance be treated compassionately? "Patronizing" is an odd word to use for a woman schooling men on this subject since the root of the word is from the Latin pater. Perhaps you mean that Rachel Maddow had the audacity to treat ignorant men with the contempt they deserve? Or do you mean that it was insolent for any woman to treat men as badly as men treat women on a daily basis?

Personally, I expect men to treat other people with respect no matter their sex, race, religion or national origin whether the men are prominent personalities or private individuals. Apparently a number of those categories are too difficult for many men to act like adults about, with the number of ignorant, rude and obnoxious things men say every day.

Sorry, but if you were offended by Rachel's presentation - deal with it.

No one, not even Rachel Maddow, can live up to the standard many of you have set for commentators.

And, like me, you wouldn't want it any other way.

Rachel spent 10:19 humiliating, shaming, and patronizing Republican men with her "Man Cave/OB-GYN For Dummies" bit.

The horror!!!

Was it merely harmless "poking fun" or was it a 10 minute bit designed to humiliate these men?

How could that possibly be anything but mean-spirited at its base?

I haven't seen the referenced clip, so I don't know whether the claim that she is "humiliating, shaming, and patronizing" someone in it "in a mocking, non-compassionate way" is accurate or not--although 'non-compassionate' is a term that I would never even think of associating with RM.

What seems bonheaded is this back-assed way of making a point--which still is only partly clear, even after the exposition in the thread.

Instead of a straightforward discussion of the issue, the OP seems more interested in slamming fellow/sister members for their views in a flamebaiting way.

It seems that your diatribe is more about US than it is about the issue. Instead of making your point on an issue in a straightforward way, you are more interested in disparaging others here for their views.

You seem to be saying that everybody does this crap, that that's the way life is, and if we still like Rachel (after your characterization about her work) that means it's okay and we should just accept it.

You assert that "No one, not even Rachel Maddow, can live up to the standard many of you have set for commentators."

But, instead of simply expressing your POV on the issue, you attack others here who may have a different POV: "Some of yous are completely ridiculous."

That is gratuitously provocative shit-stirring and flame-baiting, if you'll pardon the redundancy.

And you haven't once mentioned the elephant in the room--Rush Limbaugh--and how he measures up under your "not nice" world standards.

When are you going to hit THAT piñata ?

She was using the concept of people not understanding that there is not a clear line between abortion and contraception that can be conveniently defined as "life begins at conception." They aren't getting that if that were true, some of the BC pill's effects could be seen as terminating a life since there can still be fertilized ovum in the birth control pill context.

That includes pro-life women and excluded pro-choice men. The man cave thing was just a comedic device.

43. There is a difference between belittling a perception, and belittling a person.
Sat Mar 10, 2012, 12:00 PM
Mar 2012

Rachel Maddow was belittling the perception or lack of education - the "For Dummies" was a big give-away. BTW, the "For Dummies" book series is one of the best teaching series out there for people who want to become usefully educated in a process or subject in a casual, humorous way.
What she did was just as misandristic as mocking "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus". It's not a case of "All men are clueless about contraception", but that some men were clueless about contraception.

Limbaugh was belittling a person, a woman who he thought was being "uppity", and trying to crush her. Stating outright that the only reason any woman would want to use contraception would be to have as much sex as they can and not get pregnant.

It is an apples and oranges situation - the subject differences are some men "thinking" vs. all women "using” and delivery differences are sarcastic education vs. sarcastic castigation.

Understanding how contraception works is a matter of education - if the person then decides that contraception is immoral, that's a choice.
Using contraception is a choice.

Two different focii, two different approaches.

If Rachel was saying all men who used Viagra or Cialis were man sluts who were having so much sex every night that they needed the government to force insurance to cover enough of their little blue pills that they could have that sex, and that she wanted them all to post their porn videos before she could go along with the government requiring insurance companies to provide it, then she would be be exactly on the same page that Rush was.

BTW, it is also different for people to snark on Rush's apparent personal over-use of Viagra, as that is a sign of his hypocrisy; mocking other people's sexual activity but acting innocent about his own.
Most those same people wouldn't say boo if it was Bob Dole or someone else who had gone through prostate cancer treatment and wanted to still have marital relationships with his significant other.

Intelligent people know there is a difference between contraception and ED pills, and they know that there are a myriad of reasons that someone might need both, including medical reasons (as in, Viagra was originally a heart/blood pressure regulation medicine) and unless they are using these prescriptions for illegal purposes, "it ain't nobody's business if they do".

That was Rachel's point. Not "Hey Men, you're stupid"

Haele

A joke about a woman, made by a man, obviously is part of a big evil patriarchal scheme to denigrate and dehumanize women so men can keep on oppressing them.

A joke about a man, made by a woman, is just that... a joke.

See the difference?

I didn't hear Maddow's comments, but if I had, I probably would've laughed my ass off. But when Bill Maher makes a similar joke about women, I'm considered a sexist pig for laughing.
