Native Americans Gather to Support the Wolf in Song

New York City : NY : USA | Dec 01, 2013 at 10:24 PM PST BY Sherrill Fulghum

Some award winning First Nations musicians have gathered in support of their brother and teacher the Grey Wolf.

Once roaming across the entire country; but for the past 40 years the gray wolf has been listed on the Endangered Species Act list as an endangered species, but the United States Fish and Wildlife Service is planning to remove the wolf from that endangered species list in the United States and Mexico. While the grey wolf population has recovered somewhat since being on the endangered species list, conservation advocates for keeping the wolf on the list say that there are still areas where the wolf can still inhabit. Removing the grey wolf from the list would open it up to the dangers of hunting and trapping.

In honour and to support of the grey wolf and to keep him on the list, Native American musicians from America and around the world have recorded a CD of 12 songs dedicated to the wolf. The CD - "Wolf" - is available for $9.99 via digital download at http://www.namalive.com/. The CD will be released in January 2014.

The Endangered Species Coalition and the New York Wolf Conservation Center have mounted a campaign to oppose the US Fish and Wildlife's proposal. The idea for the CD arose after Native American Music Association President Ellen Bello made a visit to the NY Wolf Conservation Center - the beneficiary from the proceeds of the CD sales. Atka of the NY wolf conservation center is featured on the cover of the CD.

The tracklisting for the "Wolf" CD is:
"Wolves of Ice and Snow" by Jack Gladstone
"She Wolf (La Lupa)" by Jimmy Lee Youjng
"Cry Wolf" by Big City Indians
"Nature Dance" by Joanne Sheanandaoh
"Song of the Wolf" by The Graywolf Blues Band
"Lone Wolf" by Painted Raven
"Medicine Wolf" by Lee Plentywolf and The Plentywolf Singers
"Wolf Song" by Joseph FireCrow
"Forgiveness" by Jan Michael Looking Wolf
"Spirit of the Wolf" by Rushingwind and Mucklow
"Dawn" by Cal Silverfox
"Waya Adanvdo - Heart of the Wolf" by Silverwolf

... yes, a bit maudlin, but it touches my inner wolf every time I hear it. (btw, there's a quiet interlude at ~3 minutes...the song does continue)
