People don't have the right to criticize your performance?
That is the nature of show business.

(297,650 posts)other day about her making a joke about Obamacare at the CMA and it didn't go over so well with some folks.
So she can dish it out but nobody better say nothin' about her? Or they get told they're not good enough.. need prayer? right.

(17,111 posts)During any of these awards shows there are breaks where the emcees have to make jokes or htever. She and Brad Paisley made a joke about how slow the ACA website was.
They have no control over a lot of the 'banter.' It's scripted beforehand. This was a very awkward joke that was poorly written and it felt like somebody threw it in at the last second. She and Brad did not add that own their own.

(17,111 posts)They rehearse this stuff, and they didn't act like they had ever seen it. They have been very good hosts for this show, and that was one of the very few times I have seen them look that awkward.
In addition, if they had said something about it, that would have created a firestorm that would have engulfed them, the CMA and all those supporting the ACA.
The other thing about this that I find mystifying is the uproar among some about what was said. They made a joke about how slow the site was. Gawd and everybody had something to say about that issue. Some of those comments were very nasty. This was a mild shot.
Why are they being singled out for a huge wave of negativity when late night comics, to name one source, made a much bigger deal about the site and not just about how slow it was?

(5,946 posts)But she is supposed to be a nice person, supports gay marriage which is an unpopular position in country music land and does give a lot to charity relative to what most country singers do. Twitter is vicious and so are a lot of message boards - she should have shut her twitter down rather than being affected by it. She does need thicker skin, but this is one of the very few times she has been criticized, so it must come as a shock to her. Trust me, I follow people who get criticized for doing nice things because someone did not like their hair. People who are criticized just so that someone can make a rude joke, not really to do with any truth.

(17,111 posts)The Sound Of Music is an iconic movie and Julie Andrews made her Maria von Trapp an iconic character. It was a hit from stage to screen. Remaking certain films is a fool's errand. They are so set in the cultural memory that even a good remake would not be given much of a chance. Every nanosecond of such a production will be scrutinized to the nth degree.
Using Carrie Underwood in that role was a setup. The producers wanted ratings and they didn't give a damn about critics. I'll bet they looked at her Q score. She can sing and was close enough for them in that part whether she was qualified or not. They knew she would bring in more viewers which means more $$$$.
Think about it. Andrews was a seasoned actress on both stage and screen before she ever took that part. She also has a unique voice and has trained for years. Carrie Underwood can sing, but she has not had nearly the breadth of experience even in music that Andrews had. Her career has been built around a certain style. Underwood isn't Linda Ronstadt ho could sing any kind of music. Many performers are content with one area in music. That isn't a negative.
In addition, the Abbess was played by Audra MacDonald. Good luck to anybody on the same stage with her. There is no comparison between her experience and Underwood's. She would outshine most performers to some extent. Good luck to anybody trying to even dare to fill that Sound of Music role. They will be competing with a character that is flawless in many minds.
If I was Underwood's managers, I would have strongly advised her not to do it. Her fans would like it, but anybody new who saw her may not like her performance. The odds that she would be criticized heavily were off the charts. She has never claimed to be an actress. You don't just step into acting and have immediate success. Most of the people on that production would have more experience than she did. I have no idea what her contract was, but I don't think it was worth it.
Carrie is going to be criticized no matter what she does if she steps into another area. She got her start on American Idol and in some eyes that's a mortal sin. How can anybody possibly be any good if that's how they started never mind that it is the only possible chance for many. That comes up over and over.
In addition, Carrie is a country singer. That is another mortal sin especially to many on DU. Label something as 'country' and it gets crushed. To be sure, there is a lot of dreck in country music especially now. I have followed it for decades and I have never seen so many vapid country/pop performers singing about 'love, trucks, trains and home.' This is especially true of the male singers. The female singers fare better. Kacey Musgraves is a talented and edgy writer/singer. The Pistol Annies with Miranda Lambert make fun of everything.
I'll take Hank Williams Sr., Patsy Cline, Allison Krauss, Dwight Yoakum and others any day of the week. If you don't like country, that's fine. However, it is just as valid a genre as any other and i don't expect anybody to like all of them. Yes you can criticize country music and country performers. However, blasting it with generalizations and not considering different people on their own merits is a disservice. It's a disservice in any genre.
Carrie Underwood was criticized and justifiably so. However, the tone of the criticism is another thing. She might as well have twerked through the role considering some of the things written. She shouldn't bother to read Twitter or any other comment sections. Venturing into them at times can be like venturing into sewage lines. The comments people make are beyond vile. This goes for any forum that doesn't have some form of moderation.
She should not have responded. If she is serious about undertaking other ventures, she should talk to people who are knowledgeable and respected for advice. Listening only to certain people will restrict her and hurt her career. I have no idea what path her career will take. If she seriously wants to move beyond her current arena of success, she better work for it with great preparation.
Responding as she did is not a surprise. Her faith is a true part of herself. Carrie should have just said,"I am sorry that some people weren't raised right and never had the chance to learn some manners. Bless their hearts!" That is a secular Southern way of saying a lot of things and none of them good. As it was, her response was on par with saying "Be Good." Does she need a idea view of people and faith? Obviously and so do a lot of other people even here.

(42,770 posts)Do not agree at all. Sound of Music is beloved by so many people. I can't imagine that most people wanted her to fail - would think it was a very small percentage. BUT it was just way too obvious and blatant that her speaking, dancing, and acting were miserably bad that even the non-cynics couldn't ignore it.
Again - disagree. I don't care who you are or what your background is -- the role demands that songs are sung with a certain tone and that words are spoken in a manner that "fits" the place and the era. (Just think about movies you have seen with the finest actors - whose performances suck because they don't get the accent right). If it isn't, then the performance sticks out like a sore thumb - which is exactly what happened here. If you noticed - all the other actors spoke proper English almost British sounding - she spoke with 2013 affectations right out of the gate. I saw the special on how they cast the show. they said that they spent a lot of time taking the "country" sound out of her singing. I think they succeeded there - but probably ran out of time when it came to the speaking. the whole thing was a huge undertaking. They must not have had time for acting coaches. Or, maybe they did and she might have been totally worse.
She was miscast - plain and simple. And, they HAD to have known it. that she couldn't speak, dance, or act. Why not Emmy Rossum (can act and sing Broadway)? Why? because the producers decided Carrie was such a market draw that people would overlook her weaknesses. Wrong.
Her reaction to the criticism shows how naive and dumbell-y she is not to realize how wrong she was.
Are_grits_groceries
(17,111 posts)did not know how she was appearing to others or would appear. They knew when they cast her that she was not right for the part. Correcting her accent in her singing is one thing. Correcting how she was acting the part is another because she had no background in acting.
I'll bet nobody really filled her in about the preparation this would really take. She is a pro in her performances and she loved that movie. There is no way she would have wanted to appear as she did.
A lot of the criticism should be aimed at those who cast her. Everybody complaining about her not fitting the part needs to question them. They had a baseball game to prepare for and they hired a champion figure skater to play. What did anybody expect?
She is naive. As I said, her reaction fit her and was mild compared to what others might have said. She is not stupid. However, some critics took a lot of nasty shots that went beyond her performance. She probably should have expected that too. I'll bet nobody gave her a clue about what to expect afterwards.

(46,179 posts)Especially the comparison to Underwood and Andrews; they simply aren't on the same singing or acting field. And the part about the Abbess. I've never heard of Audra MacDonald, but maybe I should have. I was thinking, all the way through the sequence at the abbey, "The Abbess should have been Maria if this thing was going to have any chance."
I'm sure Underwood does a good job with country music, although I don't listen to much modern country. She was out of her league with Sound of Music.

(10,952 posts)total lack of preparation. I would think that, with all the money she makes, she could have spent some of it on acting lessons. In addition, she might have tried some live local theater productions to hone any "skills" first. A skier would not expect to win an Olympic Gold medal just because he/she can make it downhill in one piece. It took Greg Louganis and Mark Spitz years of practice to earn their gold medals in their events.
If she actually thought that she could pull off the perfomance with zero criticism she is beyond naive. NBC and her manager did her a diservice. She was in over her head and too dumb to figure it out. It is possible that someday (with a ton of hard work and acting lessons) she could pull off a role like Maria but that was not now.
Are_grits_groceries
(17,111 posts)It also may have been a very wrong assumption about what it would take and nobody bothered to tell her otherwise.
In addition, when they were rehearsing, there is no way that others didn't see what the critics saw. This was not produced by a middle school theater group. They should have tried everything and every trick to help her. She might still have bombed, bit it might not have been as awful.
Trying to help and not crush somebody is tricky. I'd bet Macdonald and others did what they could. Beyond a change in the lead or something else major, I'm not sure what would have helped.
Was she naive about it after hearing what she was told? You bet.
If she had truly known what it would take to really pull of that role, I think she would have either tried to prepare or she would have dropped it.
Carrie Underwood is nothing but a pro when preparing for her shows and other appearances. She has never been a diva. There is no way she would have wanted to bomb in this role. She loved the movie and the part. If she had a clue how it might come off, I don't think she would habe done it.

I think people complaining about her acting have to remember that she isn't an actress, and never said she was.
I think she has a good voice, and it was cool of her to step out of her comfort zone and give it a try.

I'm not a fan of Underwood but she's always been pretty helpful in speaking out for animals' rights and she's obviously a popular country singer. If I were her I think I'd have to accept that this TV movie was a bad career move, ignore the press, and go back to the recording studio.

Second, one does not have to "find Jesus" to be good, Ms. Underwood. Of course we are discussing one of the most politically/ideologically right wing genres in existence, so the average artists of the genre would only see Jesus as possible "salvation".
