"The only living President who will not attend is George H W Bush because he is eighty nine and therefore too old to attend".
Jimmy Carter is also 89 but one is healthy.
Please - that was really really stupid

(1,989 posts)I've also read stories that declare that he doesn't "hang" with the other 4 (Obama, Bush, Bush, Clinton). And, I have read that the others communicate with each other. But, that he doesn't. Hmm...if walls could talk. I bet there's a heck of story behind those relationships.

(1,989 posts)The articles I read made it sound like the other 4 REALLY get along. I think Carter is a bit more stand offish from the group. I think it's more of a Carter thing. But, make no mistake. I don't think its necessarily a bad thing. I just think Carter charts his own course. I mean, come on. Clinton has been said to be another HW Bush son around the family home. (I think that speaks more to his background.) He really gets along well with Mr. Read My Lips...and watch my socks.
I think it's a personality difference. Jimmy Carter strikes me as the serious, sober one in this group of former presidents.
GW Bush, strikes you as someone looking around for next six pack. Although, I know he supposedly doesn't drink any more. It's just his "frat" boy kind of demeanor, that I always thought he exuded.
Jimmy Carter strikes me as the loner type.

(3,709 posts)President Carter belongs to a group called the Elders, not certain exactly what that is but Mandela was also a member. I believe it is composed of former world leaders. Anyway, he is traveling with that group to the memorial and declined the President's offer of traveling on Air Force One.
Found this website for the Elders.... http://theelders.org/
Chaired by Kofi Annan, The Elders is an independent group of global leaders who work together for peace and human rights. They were brought together in 2007 by Nelson Mandela, who is not an active member of the group but remains an Honorary Elder.
