"Americas purveyors of half-baked crust and under-cooked cheese are clearly not too thrilled about paying a fair wage to their employees.
In yet another shocking example of a corporate giant exploiting its workers, employees of a New York City Dominos claim they were fired from their delivery jobs after complaining to management about unfair wages. According to CBS, Dominos said the delivery drivers worked extended hours inside the restaurant, but still for less than minimum wage and without tips. Following a meeting with management about the issue, 24 employees were terminated. Currently, the employees receive $6.00 an hour plus tips just to scrape by.
Dominos just added more fuel to the severely underpaid workers fire. Workers and advocacy groups are continually organizing protests and walkouts to demand a living wage and the right to unionize, which would protect them from examples like this one at Dominos. Assembly Member Gabriela Rosa said,"

(5,169 posts)Aren't Christian Dominionists a protestant thing? Tom Monaghan is Catholic - a member of Opus Dei and the founder of the "Ave Maria Foundation".
---------------------------------------------
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opus_Dei
Opus Dei, formally known as The Prelature of the Holy Cross and Opus Dei (Latin: Praelatura Sanctae Crucis et Operis Dei), is an institution of the Roman Catholic Church that teaches that everyone is called to holiness and that ordinary life is a path to sanctity. The majority of its membership are lay people, with secular priests under the governance of a prelate (bishop) elected by specific members and appointed by the Pope. Opus Dei is Latin for Work of God; hence the organization is often referred to by members and supporters as the Work.

Doctrine
Main article: Teachings of Opus Dei
Opus Dei is an organisation of the Catholic Church. As such, it shares the doctrines of the Catholic Church.
Opus Dei places special emphasis on certain aspects of Catholic doctrine. A central feature of Opus Dei's theology is its focus on the lives of the ordinary Catholics who are neither priests nor monks. Opus Dei emphasises the "universal call to holiness": the belief that everyone should aspire to be a saint, as per Jesus' commandment to "Love God with all your heart" (Matthew 22:37) and "Be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect." (Matthew 5:48) Opus Dei also teaches that sanctity is within the reach of everyone, not just a few special individuals, given Jesus' teaching that his demands are "easy" and "light," as his divine assistance is assured. (Matthew 11:2830)
Opus Dei does not have monks or nuns, and only a minority of its members are priests. Opus Dei emphasizes uniting spiritual life with professional, social, and family life. Members of Opus Dei lead ordinary lives, with traditional families and secular careers, and strive to "sanctify ordinary life". Indeed, Pope John Paul II called Escrivá "the saint of ordinary life".
Similarly, Opus Dei stresses the importance of work and professional competence. While some religious institutes encourage their members to withdraw from the material world, Opus Dei exhorts its members and all lay Catholics to "find God in daily life" and to perform their work excellently as a service to society and as a fitting offering to God. Opus Dei teaches that work not only contributes to social progress but is "a path to holiness", and its founder advised people to: "Sanctify your work. Sanctify yourself in your work. Sanctify others through your work."

(6,279 posts)This was in Ann Arbor... one of those "more Catholic than the Pope" folks (especially the current pope!). Monaghan founded and financed a weekly publication sent to all the Catholics in the diocese, maybe the state, that was more Republican than Catholic; he also founded his own university and law school, Ave Maria. Eventually he picked up his toys and took much of his RW Catholic empire to Naples, FL when he got tired of all the "anti-Catholic" bias (the charge leveled against opponents of his more harebrained schemes, like building a 300-foot-tall crucifix - clearly neighbors who didn't want such things were motivated by hatred of "papists" and not concern for whatever gaudy monument to his personal beliefs he wanted to put next door).

There's no love lost between myself and that place and I still avoid their pizza at all cost. But to be fair most Domino's stores are franchises, so the decisions made about these employees was more than likely the result of the local franchise owner.
What's really bullshit is that these employees were working inside the store with no chance of getting tips while being paid a wage intended for tipped employees.

The real fun for this asshole is going to come when one of the employees talks to an attorney, who can get both back pay, treble damages, and attorney's fees for him and his client, and can let the IRS come after the employer for illegally computing withholding taxes.

(2,805 posts)My interpretation is that they had their delivery drivers working in the restaurant doing jobs that should have paid at least minimum wage. So a delivery driver might make $6/hr. plus tips and a pizza cooker might make minimum wage. If you get a delivery driver to help out and cook pizza you save $2/hr and he gets screwed by making less than minimum wage.
Basically the same as having a waitress set up tables in a restaurant for a couple of hours at her normal waitress wage of $2.13/hr. It is wrong in every way. I don't know how it is usually handled but I know this point has come up before in the waitress situation.

(41,861 posts)that are mom and pop shops. San Francisco has some wonderful Italian restaurants that go back to the 1800s, when they were established. Many of them can no longer (but still try to) compete with the big companies, and the city of San Francisco has limited the amount of FAST FOOT restaurants in the city. You don't need to deal with a chain restaurant here...so there are local places, with local businessmen, and the money pays local workers a fairly decent wage.
edited to note that San Francisco is still a Union town and has not allowed Republicans to bully the Unions into collapsing. There are too many Liberal, and progressive Democrats in this town!

(57,936 posts)A tip is supposed to be an acknowledgement that the waiter or waitress gave service that was beyond what the employer pays for. Most waiters and waitresses give really good service, so it is customary to give a tip. But the waiters and waitresses should still be paid decently by their employers. The employer should not leave it up to sometimes stingy customers to decide what kind of wage the employee gets. Not in restaurants, especially fast food restaurants and worst of all, little food stands. That makes no sense to me.
nadinbrzezinski
(154,021 posts)They still get paid a minimum wage.
I have to remind myself, whenever we travel to OH, that OH has different rates for wait staff. We tip accordingly, as in better than we do in Cali.

(19,537 posts)... in a close race and Kitzhaber just announced not too long ago that he's running for reelection now. It IS a winning issue that those that get tips should have the same minimum wage requirements as those who don't. Dudley had a nasty stance on minimum wage here in Oregon, and I think that was what hurt him.
http://www.politifact.com/oregon/statements/2010/oct/15/john-kitzhaber/john-kitzhaber-claims-chris-dudley-finds-oregons-m/
Oregon's state law now protects those waiters/waitresses who make tips to have the same minimum wage. And having this law in place HAS NOT hurt Oregon's economy with them making more money now.
quakerboy
(13,921 posts)Living in Oregon, fairly politically active, and I didn't even know that was an issue in '10.
I can see where that could determine a lot of votes. Its easy to scare an employee making 2.15 by telling them that their employer will lay people off if they elect the guy who will raise that rate. But try telling a guy making 8 an hour that you want to cut their pay to 2.15, and see if he votes for ya.
What I dont get is why so many elected Oregon Dem's seem intent on starting a sales tax. I cant think of a single voter I know, either side of the isle, who wants a sales tax.
SomethingFishy
(4,876 posts)back in the 80's to keep wait staff pay at 2.15 an hour... forever? Waiters and Waitresses still make 2.15 an hour in many places... It's bullshit. Especially when you factor in that the people with money tend not to tip well at all.

(57,936 posts)DUers. All good people, but you never forget your experiences waiting tables. I have the utmost respect for people who do it year-in and year-out. It's really tiring. And you definitely get your hands very dirty. I do not think that people who eat out a lot could begin to understand how much comfort and pleasure they owe to the waiters and waitresses who serve them.
justabob
(3,069 posts)from the time I started waiting tables in 1991, until just last year, 2.17/hour was the rate for wait staff in something like 30 states. It finally went up by law last year or the year before.... to 2.27/hour. Effing insanity.

(22,271 posts)a couple of years ago after a poster mentioned it in DU's Cooking and Baking group. Not only can you grill your own cheaper and easier, it takes about the same time as delivery.
Basically, you make your own pizza dough (you can find the recipe online). After it's risen and you beat it down, break the dough ball into two parts (you can make 2 pizzas out of one pizza dough recipe). Roll each one out (ours never turns out round--usually more oblong), place on a greased cookie sheet and take out to the grill. My husband puts it on a large piece of aluminum foil and slaps it on the grill that way. Grill one side, flip it over and start putting your stuff on. We make it simple and put on marinara (I make and can that at home but commercial is just fine, even though it's more expensive), add the shredded cheese and whatever toppings you want (we usually the 99-cents a pack Farmer John sausage-cooked), olives, onions and bell peppers (pre-cooked) and cook until the crust is done.
You're looking at two good-sized pizzas for under $5.00 and they feed a LOT.

http://www.startribune.com/local/235164431.html
Last Thursday thousands of low-paid workers took to the streets in cities across the country to argue for greater income equity and a raise in the minimum wage.
The same day, a Minnesota company, Punch Pizza, announced it would unilaterally raise its own minimum wage to $10 for new employees. In fact, the company also raised the wages of more than 80 percent of its 300 employees, including pizza chefs and managers.
When I heard the news I contacted Kris Jacobs of Jobs Now Coalition, a nonprofit that conducts employment studies and advocates for a living wage for working families. Jacobs has been around the block, and the State Capitol, and has learned to be wary of corporate largesse that sometimes turns out to be a ploy for some bill that will actually harm workers a diversionary tactic in advance of a tip credit push, for example. So she made some phone calls, and then she went out for pizza.
When she entered the Punch on Grand Avenue in St. Paul, Jacobs was met by a friendly, upbeat crew.
After I gave her my order I loudly told her why I was there because their wages were going up, said Jacobs. People around me, waiting for or eating their pizzas, gave me a thumbs up. I asked her if it was a good place to work and she said, Yeah, its like a family, really!
Jacobs came away believing Punch is raising wages because it believes doing so will help keep good employees, and because diners will reward the company for it.
