Turns out American University (DC) gunman was...an off-duty cop

As the Washington Post reports:

American University was locked down for almost two hours Wednesday night after police received reports of a man with a gun, but the incident was cleared with no injuries and students were told they could resume their normal activities.

As it happened, there was a man with a gun, and by 9:30 p.m., police learned that he is an off-duty D.C. police officer with a permitted weapon, said Officer Hugh Carew, a D.C. police spokesman.

Sigh. Is it worth getting scared this often for our safety? When have lockdowns ever successfully gotten a gunman?

When it gets to the point where merely "seeing" a gun induces panic one has to question their rationality.

Locking up a building with a gunman inside does not make sense to me. As humans we are conditioned for flight or fight, you couldn't find a more unnatural response.

The only people who benefit from this are law enforcement not the public.
