The S African Interpreter for Obama

This was a comedy bit done on the Tonight show

This is the real guy

I like the triangle

Here he signing for another dignitary

In this article and radio interview in South Africa he explains

“Absolutely! Absolutely!” exclaimed Jantjie when Robbie asked him if he was happy with his memorial performance.

“I think that I’ve been a champion of sign language. I’ve interpreted at many big events, including Ma [Albertina] Sisulu’s funeral.”

Robbie then asked about an article in The Star today which reports that Jantjie has suffered from bouts of schizophrenia and in fact had an “attack” on stage at the memorial.

“Suddenly he lost concentration, and started hearing voices and hallucinating. Afterwards, it all went downhill and he just signed things that didn’t make sense,” reads the report.

On Robbie’s show, Jantjie confirmed the report but said he was uncomfortable talking about his mental health. What he wanted to talk about is “the issue that I’ve interpreted wrong”.

He said he has a formal qualification in sign language interpretation.
