Former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich (D) on Sunday lashed out of former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-GA) after he refused to accept the Republican Partys role in the increasing poverty and income inequality in the U.S.
During a panel discussion on ABC, Reich noted that Pope Francis had brought attention to the widening income inequality in the U.S.
Gingrich argued that it was time for the Democrats to give up on former President Lyndon B. Johnsons so-called war on poverty which included Medicare, Medicaid, food stamp and education initiatives after 50 years because it wasnt working.
The war on poverty which next year we are going to celebrate the 50th anniversary in addition to the Civil Rights Act, Reich interruped. The war on poverty was successful for a time. What has happened, however, over the last 30 years is much of the, much of the ardor, much of the concern, much of what propelled that war on poverty has dissipated.
Why after five years of President Barack Obama, have we seen the problem worse? ABC News correspondent Jonathan Karl wondered.
Well the problem is worse; I think it has something to do, perhaps, with the intransigence of the Speakers Party, Reich explained. Because every time there was a jobs bill, every time there was an effort to expand a low income housing, every time there was an effort to provide better opportunities for young people Were talking about equal opportunity

(16,038 posts)I may actually listen to what he says...until then, he is just another traitor to labor and hero for the 1% in the income inequality problem in this country. He is a liar or an idiot..and I think we can all agree he isn't the latter. .

(16,038 posts)If his actions mirrored his words I might care what he says. He writes these diatribes so often, blaming everyone from Obama to Donald Trump while never acknowledging the exodus of jobs because of his very own actions..A traitor he is..

(107,972 posts)In fact you deleted your response. Reich was often at odds with Clinton when he worked for him.

(16,038 posts)Without regard for his completely over the top declarations about such things as eliminating corporate income tax, empowerment of corporations over labor, belief in stewardship of multi - national corps, and the list goes on. Read his book "supercapitolism"..If one didn't know better, one would think it was written by Steve Forbes.
Reich hates labor as it has been in the US, dispises labor unions, and believes menial labor should be performed by people living in dirt floor shanties.
He strongly supported NAFTA while entrusted to represent labor as labor secretary against the wishes of over 80% of labor. To this day he pretends NAFTA has had no effect or responsibility for our labor issues.
No, Bob is a 1% bootlicker of big business while writing these fictitious populist screeds...A traitor to labor

OTOH, once out of the administration he did much better, so I write it off as his job was to tow the President's republican line.

(2,569 posts)Why can't the talking heads that moderate these gabfests ever introduce Newt as "the disgraced former Speaker of the House, who was forced to resign due to ethics charges"? Done often enough, people might start to get the idea that there might be integrity issues, here.

(18 posts)The economy is the best it has ever been.
The right people are in the right place at the right time who should get all the credit for all the income that is out there for the taking.
Especially the low skilled workers. There are plenty of people to fill the positions Americans don't want to. And the wages they earn are far more than they can make where they were born into.

(53,475 posts)After watching this video, please explain how there is no income inequality, and please also explain how "The right people are in the right place at the right time who should get all the credit for all the income that is out there for the taking", because it certainly looks to me like the people who have accrued almost all of America's wealth deserve credit only for rigging the system.
