SEATTLE (AP) -- China has suspended imports of shellfish from the U.S. West Coast, cutting off one of the biggest export markets for Northwest companies and prompting fears of a months-long shutdown.
The Chinese government imposed the ban after discovering that recent shipments of geoduck clams from Northwest waters had high levels of arsenic and a toxin that causes paralytic shellfish poisoning, KUOW public radio reported (http://bit.ly/1fe35To).
The Chinese government says the ban that started last week will continue indefinitely. Clams, oysters and all other two-shelled bivalves harvested off Washington, Oregon, Alaska and Northern California are affected.
"They've never done anything like that, where they would not allow shellfish from this entire area based on potentially two areas or maybe just one area. We don't really know yet," said Jerry Borchert of the Washington Department of Health told KUOW.

(20,587 posts)a lot of the Washington clams, geoduck etc. come from Puget Sound waters. These waters have been used as a dumping ground for industry for over a century. They thought the waters would flush to the Pacific but they do not. Several years ago the governor signed into law the Puget Sound Initiative which was set up to organize cleanup of about 10 critical sites because there are dead zones and it is affecting businesses such as shellfish, etc.
I work on outreach for the Initiative for our area and on our display, we have the test results of the wildlife tested in our local harbor. The worst are the clams - dioxins, DDT and its breakdown chemicals, creosote, pesticides, arsenic etc.
Some people, especially Asian and Native Americans subsist on the clams, crab, shrimp and fish from that harbor but the city thinks putting up warning signs is too negative.
Burrowing bivalves live in OUR history. You bet they are polluted with everything that has been dumped legally and illegally.
Also - there is a commercial fish farm within the harbor.
Pretending that it is due to Japan is living in denial of the tremendous pollution being done in the US.

(29,257 posts)I swear, anyone visiting from space would think DU'ers wanted their to be an ever-increasing problem in Fukushima instead of the reality which is that they are working towards improving the situation slowly, deliberately and carefully.

(13,685 posts)Taking cheap shots at people who are concerned about the Fukushima pollution. Guess what? Japan fucked up. Their Fukushima crap has spread around the world and is still entering the pacific and there is NO end in sight.
They were told, Japan was, that Fukushima was in a bad spot and that the company was not doing what it could to keep the damage from happening. Well, just like you do here to people who are rightly concerned, they took cheap shots at the Truth tellers. Enough.

(29,257 posts)You call it a cheap shot. I call it disinformation. Intentional disinformation. Because that is exactly what it is.
Is it not?
And why did you not try to correct that if you are into facts? Huh? I would REALLY like to know.

(13,685 posts)How about all the disinfo and the downright lies from Japan about Fukushima?
I don't see you saying anything about that.
We get that you want to protect Japan. Because really, that's all they have anymore.... a few people on the webs trying their best to keep Japan from looking like doom warmed over. We feel bad for Japan. And even worse for the pacific, because the pacific is innocent. Japan and the nuke industry, who has been full of lies, is not innocent.
Good luck to Japan. They are going to need it.

I am f'n pissed. Hell yes. That shit has landed on my place. They have lied about it all along, trying to hide the truth.
And it isn't just Japan. No. It is the US too. All of them telling their damned lies and killing the environment and the people.
Your cheap shot at me is uncalled for but typical of the way the nukers have tried to obfuscate and cover up what has happened. You seem far to wise to be onboard with them, but here you are.
I do feel sorry for Japan. They are pretty well screwed. As is everyone according to the real science about Fukushima.
I am not personally attacking anyone, but you are. You really need to review such activities because all you are doing is reinforcing the lies. I get, like I say, that you want to protect Japan. Well, the best way to do that is get Japan to tell the truth.

Some scientists claim that hydrogen, because it is so plentiful, is the basic building block of the universe. I dispute that. I say there is more stupidity than hydrogen, and that is the basic building block of the universe.

(13,685 posts)Really, the EPA has even admitted to several isotopes from Fukushima being found in their monitors from coast to coast.
I get that you want it all to just go away and act like nothing ever happened. Sadly, the truth is that the whole world and especially the northern hemisphere has been polluted with radionuclides from Fuku. Even the EPA admits to that fact.
