As if things weren't bad enough for "60 Minutes," the newsmagazine has now been given a prize nobody wants: Poynter's "Error of the Year" award, which it won for its disastrously botched story on the Benghazi attacks.
Craig Silverman, the media world's top error maven, wrote that "60 Minutes" took home the prize partly "because of the mistake itself, and partly because of the mistakes fallout."
Silverman would probably not find disagreement in too many corners for his choice. "60 Minutes" seemed to mess up at every turn, from relying on a known liar as its main source; to failing to disclose its corporate ties to the book the source was writing; to stonewalling the media when questions were raised about the source's veracity; to giving an apology that few felt was sufficient. ..................(more)

(42,757 posts)I don't even watch any more to see how truly bad they are.
I never would have thought 60 Minutes would turn into a laughing stock.

Nice work, 60 Minutes. You are dead to me now. That NSA piece may be the last time in my life I watch that claptrap.

(147 posts)...60 minutes is just the tip of the iceberg. It's all gone. And there is no where to hide. I spend every day calling all over the world where I have contacts looking for a place my wife and I can move to. Same story everywhere: "Yes, this part of the city is nice--but stay away from there, and positively do not go out at night! Be very careful of buying property. The deals are not always legit and you may end up with nothing. Bring a lot of money--but don't carry it with you! I remember a far different world, one where even early 60 minutes was a might alarming. What have we done?
Sorry for my momentary loss of control.

(718 posts).....for many years. Now, I make it a point not to watch it. Most Network News is populated by corrupt, narcissistic ideologues. I stay informed by watching a lot of Cable News, surfing the internet and by reading my local newspaper. Most local TV news programming is aimed at people with a Sunday School education and contains a lot of gibberish and pablum with very little hard news and no editorial content.

(25,348 posts)Boy...isn't that the truth? I've noticed that stations, like ours here in the Tampa bay area, have started having News about
such exciting topics as "Walmart plans an extension of the gandy rd. store in 2015" (Ah...yeah, and I should care why??) or
"Dog and Cat Care during the Holiday Season"...for 11 minutes. (I didn't know my Dog requires different care during the holidays??????)
