UCF now ranks as a powerhouse for patents
The school ranked higher than research giants Harvard, Northwestern and Duke. In 2012, UCF was granted 72 patents.
The titles of some were apparently spit out by a random word generator: Cerium Oxide Nanoparticle Regenerative Free Radical Sensor, anyone? And what kid doesn't want a High-Temperature, Wirebondless, Injection-Molded, Ultra-Compact Hybrid Power Module for Christmas?
But there's economic potential in that Tower of Babel — the starting point for products and services that eventually move from the lab into the real world.
UCF ranked 21st on the list of 100 universities named the leading patent producers by the National Academy of Inventors and the Intellectual Property Owners Association.
