NE Public employees union chief criticizes benefits hotline (food stamps and Medicaid)

LINCOLN — Inadequate staffing of a Nebraska hotline is partly why people have encountered problems while trying to apply for benefits such as food stamps and Medicaid, union officials said.

The AccessNebraska hotline, established in 2010 by the Department of Health and Human Services so people could apply for benefits, has been criticized for long wait times and poor service.

Mike Marvin, the head of Nebraska’s public employees union, told the Lincoln Journal Star there aren’t enough workers to handle all the calls.

“There’s just so much coming in that they can’t keep up with it all,” said Marvin, executive director of the Nebraska Association of Public Employees.
